Base layer+ Pro team jersey + race cape
verses
Base layer+ Pro team jacket?
The first is more comfortable, the second more versitile.
If its a bit nippy out you can ride all day in a pro team jacket. I did a ride last sunday in the Mountains. I climbed With it open and felt Nice and cool, and then zipped up for the descent. Nice and cosy. It was very undulating so it was Nice not to have to keep adding/removing layers.
Tommorrow I will go With base + jersey + windjacket for the same weather. I will be climbing for 1hr:45mins, then descending for ages. So I'll only need to change once really. So the layered system makes more sence.

Nice.
Reckon you don't need a PTJ if you have a classic soft shell.

Is the PTJ not much thinner/lighter and usable ~ 10c ?
The softshell is deep winter gear only. For 5c and below.

The softshell works for me up to 10° with just a base layer underneath.

If it's actually raining, race cape. You'll cook if you're putting in any effort though.
This.
I can't stand riding with any kind of rain/wind jacket, get overheated way too easily after 30 minutes of riding.

Couldn't resist the Rapha & Raeburn quilted jacket...I finally picked one up after admiring it for months....250 quid is certainly a lot easier to swallow than 400 quid...

This^
Weirdly the marketing trip on the description is true. You can ride fast at a range of temps. he whole selling point is how thin and stripped down it is while still keeping the elements out. If you run hot its awesome.

^ Still keeping you warm, no? As opposed to elements out?
In my experience it is not waterproof at all, but I've never been too hot in it over winter, and by the time I've got into the house, taken off my shoes etc etc, I'm usually dry again due to being warm and everything evaporating off.

Every size/colour PT glove sold out already? Next stock due halfway into the season?
They really need to sort out their stock / supply issues.
-
• #16286
This often happens, there seem to be two waves of stock, and it then means that people snap up things when the second batch arrives.

^ I wouldn't be surprised if it's a deliberate strategy to gauge demand for a new product before placing a larger order with their suppliers.

I keep mine nikwaxed. Seems to do a half decent job.
But yeah poor description. The rear insulates just enough, and the front keeps the Wind chill out.
Used mine on a 0C ride through snow, sleet, Wind and rain. While I managed to maintain pace it was Perfect. When my extremities frooze and I slowed, I was screwed.

SF, if you haven't got one already, you'd be very happy with the Gabba.

The fit is terrible. I'm admittedly a weird build. But how they expect someone buying an XL to have such small shoulders is perplexing.
This is me in the XL PTJ. Looks loose, but With a thick LS base, and the zip up its uber snug, without being restrictive. In the Gabba I cant lower my arms. In the Assos Bonka I get a Nice fit. But the arms of the PTJ dont bunch so much. Although I think they are the same length.

That is true, I quite like the tight shoulder, less flapping in the wind.

Much as Rapha bang on about pro cyclist cut. I'm built like I should be mining gold in a Tolken book. Yet their pro-team stuff fits me far better than any of the italian brands.
-
• #16293
Fit the average consumer better I guess, was expecting PTJ to be tight, but fit fine.
-
• #16294
Well the PT stuff is still cut with a pretty aggressive position assumed.
Probably designed for MAMILs who yoga.

I found the shape of the Gabba bizarre, but I'm quite big as well. It's as if they got it just right for skinny racers and then took a guess at the measurements for the larger sizes.

Oh really? I'd stayed away from nikwax for the PTJ because I'd assumed it was only for hardshell jackets. Had been using a spray-on DWR coating instead. Will try that next winter

I much prefer the Wash in stuff.
The lining of the PTJ is still fluffy so I think its the best choice. Works Magic on the Wind jacket. I had some similar Wash stuff that I tried on my oversocks. Actually worked. Tried to Wash some oil from them and the water just beaded and rolled off. I Guess its not going to magically turn them into waterproof over shoes. But Worth doing I reckon.

• #16298
Oh, and was it you or someone else who said they were tumble-drying the PTJ?
-
• #16299
Hmm - I actually find my small gabba a little roomier than I would like across the shoulders. It is pretty much perfect apart from that (oh and having the zip on the wrong side)

Yup, found the edge of the shoulder a bit big, but that's about it.
