  • SF I use a respro reflective armband thing (around my leg) and yellow shoe covers if I'm wearing the little black rapha number. My helmet's white. In combo I figure it gives me some hope of survival.

  • so whats the difference between the PTJ and the wind jacket? both are race fit, wind proof, highly breathable and water resistant (not proof)

TBH it was reaction to this mornings school run. 0C when I went to the car. Even after a decent scrapping I could barely see. Just outside the nursery, where I obviously drive super slow, and carefully. A tiny magic white light floated past. I fecking stared at it, thinking WTF is that.Turns out there was a ninja cyclist attached. Unbelievable.

Just a white helmet would have picked him out I guess.

Plus I'm thinking I'd be likely to put a bright gilet over a close fitting PTJ.

The win jacket definitely isn't race fit.

The windjacket is waffer thin, and thus packable while offering no actual insulation. I guess the PTJ is insulating and thus non-packable. Sure someone on here must have both.

  • Actually I think the new winter jersey under a windjacket is what I was thinking. Looking at the wrong Rapha page.

  • I'd be curious to know why they're so different.

Ed, On the website it says size up.

Didn't realised they advised it in the website, doh!

    Think I'll get them soon.

  • It says something a bit more tongs in cheek, like if you're not in peek condition we recommend sizing up.

  • What Smallfury said about the wind jacket - cant comment on the other and

The win jacket definitely isn't race fit.

It's not loose by any discription. But I have a large and I'm pretty stocky with a bit around my midriff so I fill it. If you're slim you won't. My Fixie (now the Bomber) jacket is also a large and I'd say they are similar fit if that helps.

  • The XL wind jacket fits me snug over the shoulders, and the arms are pretty snug too. Its not a skin tight lycra layer by any means. But for a packable wind cheater. Its probably the most fitted I've ever tried. Even the Assos ClimaJet seemed more flappy around the mindrift in my size.

  • Want to buy my XL softshell? £100. I never wear it.

  • It says something a bit more tongs in cheek, like if you're not in peek condition we recommend sizing up.

Ah, I did read that, when I tried both the Classic and Pro Team bib short, the former fit perfectly in Medium, but the latter being a "race fit", fit better in Large, can fit a Medium but that required me to ride a bicycle with a massive saddle to bar drop to be comfortable.

  • Elaborate, from what I've read, Softshell is good for the extreme winter and for general riding (especially when you're just taking it easy), whether the PTJ from the sound of it are great for club ride and long commute.

Question that have been asked many time, but seeing that the PTJ is those race fit clothing, I assumed I need to size up from the Softshell, right?

I'd say that's a fair summation of the two jackets, ed.

As for fit, you might find you're alright with the same size as the softshell. I am. But, they definitely differ in cut and purpose. I'm on the cusp of sizes with their l/s and jackets, making sure I have enough in arm length without getting flappy. I settled with the larger size with the ptj. Where as I could get away with the fit of a smaller softshell, I probably couldn't with the ptj.
Doesn't really help, other than maybe confirming trying both sizes is ideally the best option...which we knew anyway. I'd get my coat if I could only decide which one.

    very very tempted.

    Brassicks right now though.

  • Are the classic cap / condor JLT caps actually waterproof? It says they are on the website but dunno if that's just a load of marketing nonsense.

Looking out of the window now is making me think it would be a good idea to get something that will keep my bonce as dry as poss.

  • I have the classic cap and it is pretty durable and water resistant. My head has hardly gotten wet in a heavy downpour with just the cap and short showers never get through.

gwaannn. It's dead nice. I could take it to the post office today... ;)

I honestly think I'd be better off with a winter jersey.

  • But I'd use it loads none the less.

Bah. I need to have a cull in my kit boxes. Too much ill fitting crap bought on impulse from sales.

  • smallfurry, if the kit is still saleable, punt onto ebay and monies recouped can go on new better fitting kit.
So in effect you will be spending nothing...

I've been given a strict budget by Mrs Smallfurry. So I've been doing this a lot. Although that has led to me lying about kit leaving the house just as much as I always lied about stuff entering it.

  • Ordered the PTJ. In orange. In medium. An aspirational purchase, on so many levels...

  • if you want to be orange, wouldn't fake tan be cheaper?

  • Think I'll pop down and have a look at that orange lark,I'm liking the look of it.
