Can any Rapha wearers advise on a suitable gilet to wear on top of Rapha baselayer and beneath their wind jacket?
I'm thinking something soft shell rather than windstopping. The above will be my winter get up this year...

The wind jacket doesn't do to well in the rain IME, maybe you want to rethink that layer to something more waterproof?

The softshell gilet is pretty good but doesnt look like they do it anymore.
I just got my softshell jacket through the door. Off ebay for less thank half the price thatll do.
Now to wait for some cold enough weather.

When i was looking into this last year Gore was the definitive answer.

gilet is the last layer always

Yep. Maybe stick a racecape/shell over the top if it gets torrential but that's a work-around if shit hits the fan.
Sounds like you need a jersey or LS baselayer *.
- 2 baselayers (merino SS, windstopper LS) is nice.

Gore make Scott (which can be had cheap). They also sell that windstopper fabric to plenty of others – it just has to keep some wind off your chest and it's done it's job.

Yeah.
Worth saying. The ones I looked at didn't have the part that is sewn into the jacket and goes over your hands, to keep the jacket under your gloves.
If they're all like that, I wouldn't by one. One of the best parts of a winter jacket. Keeps the jacket from riding up your arms and water seeping in. Essential oversight if so. But I know some of the softshels don't have it and some do.Mine has those loops.
I find most of Rapha in S way, way too short in the arm. The softshell is an ok length though.
Castelli are great for the long limbed and skinny.

Care to be a little more specific?

So Sportful own Castelli and Gore own Scott?

If its not on the outside, and wont be doing windstopping duties. How about the merino gilet?
I have a cycle specific fleece vest somewhere. Which did this well. But since I started wearing more fitted outed layers its become too thick.

I didn't actually read your post properly. Are you wearing a jersey? If not then a LS one would be the most obvious answer and should give you the warmth and wicking you need. I'd be surprised if baselayer+jersey+windstopper doesn't keep you *warm *enough for 90% of the weather in the UK. But YMMV
If it does get that cold then I'd just put another baselayer on, or you might want a warmer winter jacket/jersey. Personally I'd wait until it gets that cold.

I've always hated the thumb loop things on my softshell - the seams end up under contact points and rub rub rub. They do stop draft though.
I cut off the seams end up and it's much more comfortable.

Thanks for the advice all. I think a long sleeve base might be a viable option than a gilet. Gore looks like the best bet.
*Edit, I'm not wearing a Jersey as this would make me too hot, a LS base sounds best...

If you dont need the pockets of a jersey, or the windproof properties of a gilet. Then yes a LS jersey in a heavier weight would be more comfortable.
I bought a Rapha wind jacket recently. My plan is to use it with a merino mesh vest, a short sleeved jersey, and merino arm warmers. That way I can either wear it all and be comfortable even if its pretty cold (although not so rain proof). Or pack the warmers and jacket into my jersey pockets.

Who makes a reasonably priced mesh-back gillet? I'm finding a long sleeve merino top (160g) is perfect for this weather except first thing in the morning when I get a cold chest.

A gilet is made of wind/water repellant often reflective material and is meant to go on the outside of a longsleeve jersey or a shortsleeve with armwarmers when its cold but not cold enough for a jacket.

My desente one has a mesh back. It cost £10.

I think Endura do one...

Just saw this light Gore one on PBK for £45. Only S and M though.

Rapha Gloves:
I saw and had a really good look at these when I was at the Supercross on Saturday and they look like they're massively improved over the last winter gloves.
Does anyone have a pair (of any of them) and what do you think of them so far?
After getting to inspect them, I am very, very tempted.

It's the one involving covets.. or maybe duvets. Who knows.
