Yeah, the thing with the merino and lack of smell is the main argument for shelling out for Rapha for me because it makes a case for the merino being the financially sound option.
There are times when I'll sacrifice performance for cost and if that was all it was, I may go cheap and trade off a cooler base layer with a warmer jersey or a just a dose of HTFU (non-Norwegian climes). But when the 'cheap' alternative is half the price, but needs to be replaced four times as often because I can't bear to be in the same room as it, then my mind is made up.

Dressing for a changable climate in synthetics can be a bit hit'n'miss. Some brushed lycra, and a windproof covering for your core. Will get you through most of it, and I'm thinking UK autumm here. But the toughest part of any ride for me. Is getting out of the house. Getting the right gear on, and the bike ride ready. Thats when a selection of merino baselayers pay off. Chucking one on seriously increases your margin for error.
No point in having a uber dollar MAMIL machine, and spending the whole ride wishing you werent so cold/warm.

Does anyone rinse their kit after a ride? Mainly pits area?
-
• #12956
Yeah I rinse, wash and dry it...

be careful to buy 100% merino if you want the lack of smell function. I have a Rapha cross jersey that is a
merino mix and a mixed Cafe du Cycliste jersey and both stink after the first ride. -

sometimes you have to look for the common denominator to find the root cause.

If you have smelly clothes it's because your hygiene is poor or you use a block of silver as antiperspirant. Both are a bit grim.

my 100% merino jerseys don't stink
-
• #12961
You'all quoting the merino 'miracle' as the anti- stink factor but tbh I don't really sweat or smell badly after/when riding. I was more concerned with whether it keeps you warm in the winter?

• #12962
dont fall for it. everything stinks if it doesnt you need to ride harder and more often

What do you suggest? I tried Pitrok (spray) this summer, in a bid to prevent damage to my clothes, but it wasn't up to the job.

Shower and wash your kit? Might not be the ideal solution, but it works...
-
• #12967
Yeah that washing thing works for me, no matter what the kit is. If its sweaty, its gonna stink!
-
• #12968
^^ & ^, Yeah, i suppose. I thought if 1 and 1's clothes were clean then sweat wasn't meant to turn to smell. The Pitrok stuff went on clean skin, as directed, and I'd wear clean shirts, but i didn't always have cofnidence in it. Was hoping he had a suggestion for a better toiletry to use than that or a harsh antiperspirant.

Wool insulates better when its clean. Worth using a proper detergent for the job. Overwise the fibers get trashed over time.
