  • is it long enough for 70% of their customers waists?

    measuring tape anyone??

  • There's no way I'm shaving my legs.

Velocio, can this be our motto in the header bar?

  • Does the tape change from white to black when you reach MAMIL sizes?

  • Going to Greece next week 26-30 odd degrees, lightweight jersey or super-lightweight? And what is up with the pockets on the LWJ?

  • ahem

    Rapha Tape Measure!

LWJ did me fine in Oz summer temps, but I don't have a super light. What's the problem with the pockets? I'm not sure I remember ever running out of space.

  • With winter now on the doorstep. (pesamistic)

I want a hi viz riding jacket. Fed up with the SMIDSY, and I feel riding in ninja doesn't help.

Love my Softshell, so versatile. But possibly want something a little more for proper winter.

Anyone got or tried the hardshell to compare?

Cheers. LWJ has two 'proper' back pockets with a vertically zipped central 'ballast pocket' as opposed to the usual three pocket layout. Was curious as to how that worked. I usually stow my tool bag in the central back pocket.

I do! I absolutely love it. Very waterproof and generally weather proof. If you want something that just laughs at the elements, get a hard shell. I've never tried a softshell, but I can imagine they're quite warm. The hardshell is too, as it doesn't really let much heat escape, so you may find yourself overheating if the temperature is 10 degrees+.

Really well made too and has three nice deep pockets at the back that are good for actually going on rides and a zip pocket on the side that I use for an MP3 player and another zip pocket on the back that I use for cash/card/phone.

Couldn't be happier with it, but as always, nice but a bit pricey... But I still think it's worth it.

You'd still get the SMIDSY even with high vis.

Road positioning and communication make the biggest difference, not clothing.

    Oh yeah, and this!^

  • DJ.. So slow on the forum these days.. New job has me actually working.. Hard..

  • I am thinking of purchasing the Classic Wind Jacket where I can more of less just have the one jacket all year round ( I have been thinking of getting a Swrve Milwaukee but seems more for the colder months), but was wondering how it would fair if I was to use it off road also?! As anyone else used this jacket off road, I know they are mainly for road use but I can't seem to find other jackets that are supposed to perform and look good, there are other brands at the same price but having a City jacket the other (had to sell due to losing weight) I know their products are nice (last long also) if a bit pricey.

  • So the hardshell sounds like a proper winter training jacket. Decent.
Love my softshell, but just want something a bit tougher and bright colour.

Yeah yeah I know. And when the weather is okay, black is fine.
But when it's raining and dark, or a foggy morning or snowing. I'd like to up my chances at life a bit.
I know there is a difference, as I've been able to spot people in bright stuff when I couldn't see their riding partner or another person until I was a lot closer.

Road positioning is fine and all and important. However when you're out in the countryside or on a busy road, and conditions are as above, being in a bright colour will help a car see you from further away so they can adjust their speed to pass in plenty of time, not at the last moment. Being in a bright colour will make a difference in shit winter conditions.

  • So do good lights...

  • ^This. Light yourself up like a flippin' xmas tree and slap on reflective tape. Hi-viz is wac, yo

  • Yes undoubtably. And I use lights.
But I stand by what I say. I would like to wear a brighter coloured top for even better visibility.

Plus then when I get run down, I can say I was wearing hiviz and they should have seen me. Not be subjected to, well if you weren't dressed like a ninja.

  • +1 for reflective tape (I quite like the black tape, for the stealth look).
I have found that wearing hi-viz in the city with everyone else doesn't seem to have any effect. However on quieter roads with less visual clutter, I notice people do actually move over a bit more.

  • I went past an entire family walking in hi-viz jackets, two adults and about 5 kids, on a cycle path in broad daylight the other day. Thought they were mental and then around the corner was another lot, so I decided the world had gone mad instead.

    Hi-viz mad.

You may as well dress up like Ronald MacDonald if you're that worried about not getting noticed. (The families, not you skinny).

The human eye is definitely imperfect and misses plenty of detail but hi-viz can rapidly go into the realms of over-kill IMO.

I want no part of it, I'll live and die a ninja.

  • Jeebus, it's easy to spend a lot of money on Rapha. I take it there are no current discounts around? I could use something to take the edge off the sting .

  • Plus then when I get run down, I can say I was wearing hiviz and they should have seen me. Not be subjected to, well if you weren't dressed like a ninja.

I passed a guy riding a tourer in horrendous weather on Monday, wearing nothing but black, had two decent rear lights, but these were useless in the shite weather. I could hardly see him. Surely if you're touring and your faced with the decision of what colour bag cover to buy, would you buy black?!

Again, good road positioning, communication and good light make the biggest difference in being visible, even in countryside lane/busy road, e.g. overtaking instead of undertaking traffic at a decent speed that allow you to perform an emergency stop if says, a car pulled out in traffic.

In the last audax I did, it was those all-nighter one, and even in the torrential rain, I were able to make out another audaxers in front of me in the far distance with those Exposure light.

TL:DR; people nowadays spend a lots of money on high vis, yet skimmed on lighting.
