  • i think wiganwill has claimed or attempted to.

  • Still worth a punt if you can go back and take a photo (including one with a ruler or recognisable object, so that the scale of the hole is obvious), plus photos of the bike damage.

And I suppose you'll need a quote from your lbs for the repair/parts.

  • fillthathole.somethingthatdoesntgetporn might have info

  • Is this the kind of thing which is claimable against the council that failed to fill in the pot hole? It was a sudden and deep-ish hole and really threw me when I hit it. Unfortunately in moving traffic it wasn't visible until way too late and sudden braking could easily have been more dangerous (I couldn't have swerved either... the traffic was close).

diable mentioned you need to report the hole first, since if they are unaware of it they can't be held responsible for it. Someone on here must have claimed.

    Fortunately hippy is wrong.

Some years ago I had a similar problem where I was on a roundabout in heavy traffic so couldn't see the pothole and when it was visible avoiding it would have been too dangerous. I claimed (the council bounced the claim to TFL as it was maintained by them (they maintain all non principle arterial routes and most of those used by buses) and it was paid promptly. Admittedly I was working for the Department for Transport at the time and sent all correspondence from my work email address, which may have expedited things a little, but the claim was reasonable. I had not reported the pothole prior to the incident. Had I been aware of it, I would have taken precautions to avoid it.

On very minor routes there could be a claim of ignorance of the problem but the current awareness of potholes owing to the prior winter conditions implies that the council will know of the potential for potholes. Furthermore, if the pothole has been in existence for in excess of two weeks then the council has had adequate opportunity to become aware of the pothole through their own staff and contractors (rubbish and recycling collection at the very least).

  • I tend to try and ride round them if I can (quick look over the shoulder obv) but if it's a late shout, as it were, lift front wheel over and unweight rear (hoping it's not a Roy Orbison of course) and bobble over cursing.

  • Depending on where it was it is the council or TfL's responsibility (red routes). Report it on TfL website they will pass it on to the council if not their route. And yes you should claim.

I reported a couple of potholes the past two weeks, one is Wandsworth responsibility and hasn't been done, one is TfL's responsibility and has been sort of filled in but not to the top so there is still a drop, I couldn't believe it....

Since I was quoting someone I cannot be wrong.

You propogated misinformation. Therefore you are wrong.

    I am never wrong.

Writing down what someone has said is writing down what someone has said. Whether or not it is true means nothing, they have said it and it has been documented. It's a fact. If they are wrong then that's all well and good.

Brilliant, I shall make a claim then.

It's a deep hole so must be older than a few weeks. It's also on an artery (Piccadilly) so it's presence should have been spotted.

  • get a pic asap. a friend fractured her cheekbone a couple of weeks ago but the pothole was being filled the next day before it could be photographed for evidence.

If the hole has been filled. Take a picture of it anyway (fresh tarmac only stays fresh for a short while in LFL) preferably with a copy of that day's free paper next to it and email them the picture on that day. Then log an RFI to find out when the hole was filled and by who.

  • I noticed a small dent in my rear rim after a clumsy hop up a curb onto the pavement. Any chance I could claim against the council as their curbs are too square?

  • Absolutely.

  • Is that the Edge wheels you've cracked Dave?

  • I rode through a pothole this morning. Wasn't going at a great speed, just above average commuter pace... so that'd be in the 16 > 18mph area (from the gear I was in and my estimated cadence at the time).

The thing is... I heard a hell of a cracking/whacking noise from the rear wheel and arrived at work to discover that I've had a spoke snap (sheered off near the nipple) and the rim now has a crack in it.

lose some weight / get a brake / do a skid etc..

  • The Edge will not be happy with that.

    hater ...

  • That pothole looks like Roy Orbison:

favourite thing of the entire day so far eva 2k10

  • The Edge will not be happy with that.

    hater ...

hehe :) VB do you have an alias?

    (I'm feeling cocky today)

  • i would say hop , there's no telling whats in the hole or how deep it is.

    sorry if i missed something.

i remember when this happened, i can't believe you got a picture of it!

  • i noticed a snapped spoke this morning, was not there yesterday when i left the house, cant see significant damage on the rim

i also pedal down Piccadilly every day

no idea where my spoke broke though, so cant join in the class action lawsuit

  • Is that the Edge wheels you've cracked Dave?

    Yup

lose some weight / get a brake / do a skid etc..

At 75kg I'm not heavy, I have hydraulic 4-pots, and I skid easy (see brakes).
