  • Buy a bottle of scotch to bring with you in case of cold weather!

  • Might need some port too!

  • The weather was gorgeous, so good in fact that I'm now a shade of pink. Camped wild on a hillside near Southease and was treated to these views at 5.30am.

  • Anyone used Archies https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jahdroid.archies&hl=en_GB
or other campsite maps in Europe before?

  • TCR5

These places and the roads in-between, but it would also be useful for future trips.

  • We're going with two kids.

Anyone been anywhere nice (probably somewhere verging on the glamping side of things to be honest...) within a couple of hours of London? Everywhere I've been has been for climbing trips, so they're all a bit basic and out of the way. Sussex, Brighton, any direction really.

Also - Corfe Castle / down that way is amazing, it's just a bit too far for us this time.

  • Yes, I've climbed (and drunk at the Square and Compass) there a lot. Love it.

However, I've also been stuck in traffic for hours on the way and back on Sundays and I don't want to risk it this time around.

  • After a pretty poor nights sleep camping last night, I'm after some pillow advice.
I've got an inflatable pillow which is completely shit. In the past I've just stuffed excess clothes, etc into one of the stuff-sacks but I want more comfort.
Apart from taking a pillow from home what options are there?

  • Well last nights camp was just me and my eldest son, so no good.
Also our youngest is still breast feeding so he has first dibs on the boobs anyway.

  • Ride for, say 20 days before you try sleeping, or as diable says, drink.

  • Thanks for the recommendation, looks great!

  • Can highly recommend here but it's not camping, you rent out one of their wagons or a frames. No electricity and compost loos. Cute animals to feed. Spectacular setting and you can drive easily to Rye and Hastings for a mooch.

  • Long shot.

Does anybody have a spare pole bridge for a Eurohike 415TS tent...?

Unfortunately broke mine on a recent trip to the Lakes, see attached. Blacks (who I think own the brand) say it's no longer supported.

Will pay beer. Or Look pedals.

  • Speak to me about camping in France. We camped in Briancon and Bourg d Oisains last summer but will have a baby with us this this summer so ideally don't want to head down as far as the alps. Any one know and awesome French campsites? Will have 10yo daughter with us to so either needs to be extra specially beautiful and remote or have good facilities for older kids. Cheers

  • I've lost the outdoors thread... But I'm sure one of you will be kind enough.

    What's the best camping stove?

  • I run the MSR Whisperlite International on petrol.
It's amazing and petrol is never far away.

  • Best for what? I like my Trangia - not the lightest or smallest, but it's silent, stable, and windproof, and in Europe at least meths is easy to find. Great for proper cooking.

  • might be a bit late, but have you tried the Hutopia sites.

  • Dredge.

I'm going to California in a few weeks, and kinda want to try wild camping. I've car camped quite a lot, but want to spend the odd night in the middle of nowhere (fiancee's 30th, for example!). We're planning for a trip to Sequoia National Park at the end of May.

It'll likely be pretty cold and it's at altitude, so I want to gather a list of things that we'll need that I've not thought of, to determine if this is a stupid idea. We'd likely not spend 2 consecutive nights camping, would most likely be hike out, spend night, hike back to car for proper food and night 2.

What do I need, and what should I look for in a tent, stove etc?

  • You'll need a permit to wildcamp in the US National Parks and you'll have to invest in a food storage system to keep the bears away from the tent.

  • Yeah you can rent canisters from the parks, just need to reserve them, which is cool. Unsurprisingly there's a fair bit of permit availability for late May too, feel like it's quite early in the season.

There's also all the fun stuff about packing out toilet roll to look forward to

  • If you don't already own tents and cooking stoves it might be worth renting?

The US seems to like single skin tents a lot more than we do in the wet UK. Less rain so they work better over there.

A multi-fuel stove is your best bet if you want to buy one that'll work everywhere.

MSR Whisperlite is great but as they are a US company you'll probably get it cheaper there rather than buying it here.

  • Nice thanks for the tips. I’ve been looking around and think I might just do a ram raid on REI when I get there
