Wrote up a blog post about why I like my army 'goretex' surplus bivvy bag so much.

Disappointing lack of tauntaun examples... ;)

Excellent post. One thing though, GORETEX is a membrane not a fabric.
-

If you're going to be nitpicking...
it's "Gore-Tex" and it's W. L. Gore & Associates's trade name for a waterproof, breathable fabric membrane.

I have a distant memory of camping with just a tent. Should’ve bought those Decathlon shares.

Lolz, haven’t even included the crate of cider needed to cope with this circus.

You're doing well to fit all that on a Brompton.

Nice, thanks. And now I know what an avalanche probe is, every day's a school day

Cross-post, looking to rent or borrow a bivvy for the next couple of weeks, if you kind folks have one that won’t be in use

There is no need to be upset.
Not trying to rustle any jimmy's

Seems strange to assume I'm upset. You 'corrected' someone and I 'corrected' you. Were you upset?
-
• #496
Hyphen aside (I'll award you .5 points for that) you can only correct someone if you are correct.
Which you are not.
GORE-TEX is a membrane made from stretched Polytetrafluoroethylene (a fluropolomer) to create Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFD for short) and thus 100% not a fabric (woven fibre).
GORE-TEX FABRIC refers to two separate bonded materials. You foolishly italicised both words 'fabric membrane' rather the correct, 'membrane'.
Would you refer to TEFLON as a coating? I think you would - it's exactly the same principle.
-
• #497
Yeah, but apart from Wikipedia saying so (the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth) it's used as a fabric in the sense that it makes stuff like clothing so I'm still right. Ain't language grand?
-
• #498
Broadly yes, technically no.
-
• #499
I'm glad we've resolved this important issue.
Gore-Tex fabric 5, Gore-Tex membrane 1.

Pffft, a fabric membrane is obviously a membrane applied to fabric, so hippy, as usual, wins and is always right. :)
We just did a week here.

Very very remote, mostly cycle tourists and through hikers.
Quite basic, no hot water on site but a wash in the river is life affirming.
