• For a Phil low flange fixed/free rear and front matching hub and a pair of 32 hole Open Pros I have a nice set of DT Swiss spokes that are 294mm.
The online calculators vary between 294.2 and 294.4mm with 3 crosses so I thought going down to the nearest mm would be OK.
BUT a well known independent store says I need 296mm.
As I have no idea about building wheels who is correct and do I return to aforesaid snooty store and tell them to stick their spokes you know where and just get on with using the ones I have supplied?

  • 296mm is the 3X for a standard Shimano LF road hub to Open Pros. They are 40mm and the Phils are 48mm.

    294mm look right from here.

  • diffrent spoke calcs some times give diffrent results, it's compound errors one way or the other.

  • I am trying to find the right spoke length, to build up my 48 hole chukkers. I've had huge difficulties finding the right spoke length to go with my profile 3/8 tru 48 hole hubs. I am looking to do 4x. Can anyone help me out, who has the similar set up? I've tried countless spoke calculators but they all seem to come out with random shit. thanks

  • Measure the hub, measure the rim, punch into spocalc, job done????
If you're REALLY stuck, send me the numbers.....

  • i have a ambrosia formula hub and a 700c deep v and was wanting to know the spoke length needed? thanks

  • how many holes?

  • 32

  • go on the dt swiss website it has some hub rim combo's on there

  • how many cross?

  • i have a small feeling that you may need 292 for a 3 cross......only a feeling though.

  • front or rear as you need different lengths for the drive and non-drive sides

  • i have a small feeling that you may need 292 for a 3 cross......only a feeling though.

Wrong feeling. Its around 278 3x.

front or rear as you need different lengths for the drive and non-drive sides

Wrong. Its a symmetrical hub. Same spokes front and back.

  • ok didn't check if the hub was that way or not ..sorry

  • Flange diameter at spoke hole centers: Ø 62mm for the formula hubs. Not sure of the center-flange on them though...

  • 282s
Just checked in work. Thats for 3x.

  • thanks for the help everyone

  • 282mm with 12mm nipple

  • cheers

  • I'm working on my first ever wheelbuild and I want verification of my calculation.
I'm completely new to this but I have a mate who said he'd show me how to do it once I had all the parts.

    I'm using spocalc.xls

The hub is a Shimano XT fh-m732 - It's not included in the included database, but I found this: http://www.cyclingforums.com/archive/index.php/t-30280.html
Does that look trustworthy? If so then the measurements are
    -45mm L37.5mm R23mm

    The rim is a Mavic A319 - diameter 604.5

I popped it all in and the output was left length 292.8 right length 291.3

    Does that look right?

    Cheers
    Tim

  • Hub measurements look feasible - they are only a couple of mm different from the XT-m752 rear

How many spokes and what crossing are you using?

p.s. I use lenni - which has the same back-end as spocalc, and should give the same results, but is a little easier.. and lenni (ehren fried chicken on the forum) is adding hub / rim data as it comes.

    http://lenni.info/edd/

  • It's gonna be 36 spokes and I've been advised 3 cross. TBH I don't know much about the difference crossing patterns make.

It's for a 7 speed rear wheel for a tourer.

  • That Lenni programme is great. Really nice and simple.

  • I've just used this for calculating my first build, now i just need to find somewhere that sells 289.5mm spokes in batches of 32

  • Baker St bikes do alot of wheels and wheelbuilding, I imagine they're your best bet. Is Gravity Karma giving you a build tutorial?
