Yep- it’s laminated foam strips, you cut down to a depth consistent with a layer (ish) and then pull the foam out.

Ok, tote thing is done for now - left a (very small) amount of room for whatever I have forgotten. This layer is meant to be the stuff I use all the time, and to be put in the boot when heading out for a few hours just in case.

so when you want to add or change a tool later it's a massive pain in the arse? got it

Not really, just cut a new bit of foam- it’s really easy.

I have forgotten a spoke key/keys.

That sharpie is being shown the most respect having it's own little cut out.
Dangle Spokey?

I've spent far too long looking at various tool cases at different price points but I think I'm now convinced to go with festool.
I like the stackable modular design. -

That’s to make pulling that pallet out nice and easy. I’m have space in the deep foam block to put spoke keys

Also, I might have missed this, but do you have wheels for the bottom of the full stack?
-

Yeah, the modular aspect is what sold me (and they’re cheap relative to Peli Cases, and I hope that they’re pretty tough, as I imagine various craftsmen would be pissed off if they disintegrated around their expensive tools). Plus you get a large range of options- I have a mid depth box, the tote and a multi compartment storage layer which all stack together into one unit that goes in the boot or the corner of the utility room.

They’re tough. Vitsœ installers swear by them. Get the Festool skate for the bottom of your stack. It’s really neat.

I don't, the full stack is light enough to carry around. If I add more boxes then I'd get the wheels. I'm more likely to get a worktop of some kind (they do one currently, but I don't think it's the right size) in order to be able to clamp stuff down - I had to wander into a local bike shop on holiday to get borrow their vice to clamp my crank-arm to get the chainring lockring off.

Yep. You’ve inspired me. I’m thinking of consolidating various tool bags and boxes into one systainer stack with the top box containing the frequently used at close to waist height.

It's a good exercise - makes you think what you actually use daily/weekly/monthly/annually.
I've got a load of big presses that I use for certain bottom brackets, headsets etc - which get used (averaging things here) every two years or so. I've got Campag specific tools and no bikes with Campag - these are the tools that it is easy to leave in the garage.
Working out which tools go in the first layer and which in the second of your mobile set on the other hand is more difficult, especially if space is limited.

For the next month I’m going to put the tools I use in a cardboard box Tara her than putting them away. That selection can become my top systainer/tote.

That just fell victim to “it’s too fucking large relative to its value” and a Klein strap wrench is inbound.

You could apply that logic to a few other bits as well. What's the torch for?

Once you get used the efficiency of the work improves as well. They are washable.

These last long enough to justify washing them?
I use gloves that look like this but different brands, oils and solvents plus a bit of elbow grease and it's breaking apart in about a week.
Is there a specific brand to look at?
I wonder too.
I've seen some foam inserts that are layered so that you cut to a certain depth then just peel it out.
