  • I can't start new threads yet but thought I could join in here looking for a bit of advice. Since starting riding this year I've tried various shoe/pedal combis and retention systems. I only ride roads, have done day rides up to 167 miles and have a 40 mile round trip commute. What I've tried:-

Step 1 - Bog standard cage flat pedals and running trainers - always had to move onto something else, comfort/grip was low and feet got cold.

Step 2 - bought some Impact 5-10 low cycling trainers - definite improvement in comfort and very grippy

Step 3 - added Powergrips, standard size, to pedals - I take a size 10 and the 5-10's are chunky, I should have gotten the longer straps - also very unhappy with idea of the fiddly adjustment every time I wanted to ride in different trainers/shoes - sold the Powergrips, but I did like the diagonal twist idea

Step 4 - got BMX style pedals with the little prongs/studs - coupled with the 5-10's grip is excellent, actually have to lift foot to move on pedal - nearly all of my 5k miles this year have been on this combo

Step 5 - made the change to clipless, MTB shoes with SPD's and Shimano double sided - hated every moment of it and, after 50 miles, swapped back - didn't like being attached to bike like that - really didn't enjoy falling off bike for first time and hated not being able to jump on the bike in any old shoes - did try flat/spd combo pedals but wasn't impressed - sold off the bits

Step 6 - put name on list for Jol/Gurney straps and in meantime ordered some of the Hold Fast ones - fitted them and tried them out - ok but again didn't seem designed to accept big chunky trainers - very expensive with shipping from US - straps themselves are pretty big and solid and may be overkill as I'll not be riding fixed or doing tricks - these are currently off bike(only used for 2 miles) pending verdict on other velcro style systems

Step 7 - still on list for Jol straps but also saw a picture of an Archies Grobag version which looked interesting. Seemed to be a cross between Powergrips, ie diagonal fit and HoldFast/Jol velcro ones. Couldn't seem to see how they fitted to pedals and can't actually find them for sale, but think they might be the best option.

So I'd say I'm looking for a velcro adjustable strap that doesn't need to be able to cope with the rigours of fixed or tricks?

  • Did just find this web page that seems to cover a huge variety of straps:-

  • I didn't know Archie's was doing toe straps now too

  • They're still in the testing stage. Awaiting reply to PM on getting hold of some.

  • YES. The Archies ones have got it. Its ALL about the twist in to the straps.
Consider me on the waiting list too!

  • You're going to have to wait a while I'm afraid.

Scott was unhappy with the longeveity of the straps, though as mine were abused 4-5 days a week at polo I'd say they did pretty fucking well.
Still, Mr notscot has a new design (Same mechanism but without the hardware) in the works which I will be testing later this month. If he's happier with how they last and they're cost effective for him you may well see them hit the market in the future.

That said, they will be going on my travel/occasional polo bike rather than my main rig. hence, test results will not be available as quickly as the original strapons.

  • His new prototypes do look sick

tell Scoot that if he need a proper tester, that put the straps into proper stress riding fix, not freewheel, I will be more that happy to do so

I've passed the message on, but you should know better than most that they're going on the Surly, freewheel for polo, 70.6 fixed the rest of the time.

You're welcome to borrow my set for a day of polo, once I've got them.

  • i may have some black hold fast straps for sale soon, watch this space
