There are no laws against being racist.
Is this a question of semantics (i.e. it's actually racially motivated behaviour that's a crime...) or are you suggesting that racism isn't a crime in this country?

It's not semantics (although I take your point) - simply put- racism is not a crime in this country (or any other country as far as I am aware).
Additionally - racially motivated behaviour*, as such, is also not illegal - in itself - unless it is in breach of British law.
- whatever racially motivated behaviour might be.

So in truth it probably is an issue of semantics then - working in the existing legislative framework provided by the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, discrimination on the grounds of race, which I would generally term as 'racism', is illegal.
As a whole, 'racism' is wrong (from my moral perspective), but not illegal, but 'racism' in terms of defined behaviours or actions is illegal...

No, I promise being racist is not a crime, I promise ! honestly ! :)
Telling your girlfriend: *"these fucking Chinese bastards, they come over here and think they own the place, all they do is bring disease and scrounge off the state." * - is simply not a crime, nor should it be.
. . . discrimination on the grounds of race . . . is illegal.
Only when it comes into conflict with British law, you are free to discriminate on grounds of race, gender, height, social status, beauty, wealth, health, age, colour, religion, ideology, politics, sexuality (absolutely anything) . . . . as long as you are not in breach of British law.

We are drifting into the foggy philosophical waters of definitions, where many an argument has run aground. :)
Racism is certainly not illegal in terms of 'defined behaviours' or 'actions' (is not 'actions' simply 'defined behaviours' ?).
Whichever way we cut it, racism is simply not illegal any more than sexism or isolationism, xenophobia or misthanthropy is illegal.

That was me, that was.
Actually in all seriousness, this illustrates my point.
They were done for 'publishing and distributing racially inflammatory material' and 'possessing racially inflammatory material with a view to distribution.' (the operative phrase in the second part here is with a view to distribution).
They were not done for 'being racist' - 'or holding racist views' which is, of course, not in anyway illegal.

I will have to admit to a certain truth here, I am racist to a degree, against the human race, I don't much care whether people are Asian, Chinese, Anglo Saxon, South African, North American or whatever - a misanthropist if you must, I think we are all horribly flawed, a bad old bunch of idiots.
Especially the Jews.

Ok, I was joking about the Jews, I actually like the Jews, as much as I think religious people are just liked normal people except that they are intellectually dishonest and struggle with basic cognition, I still love the Jews. The Jews have managed to rise above their Bronze age roots and now largely follow a cultural norm rather than a religious idea (except for the Hasidic / orthodox Jews who can go and fuck themselves) - where would American humour be without the Jews, at the very very least they have given us some fantastical funny comedy - maybe even defined late 20th century US comedy - unlike the fucking Christians.
The bastards.
I've been drinking.

I can't multiquote on my phone, but if I put your comments in inverted commas, I'm sure you get the idea...
"No, I promise being racist is not a crime, I promise ! honestly ! :)
Telling your girlfriend: *"these fucking Chinese bastards, they come over here and think they own the place, all they do is bring disease and scrounge off the state." * - is simply not a crime, nor should it be."
But it can be a crime. This is a question of extremes and interpretation. Someone - anyone - could read that, interpret it as being racist, and it is thus a "racist incident" under the terms of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000. You're not likely to be charged, but it doesn't make it any more legal - just like speeding and not being caught doesn't justify the act.
"Only when it comes into conflict with British law, you are free to discriminate on grounds of race, gender, height, social status, beauty, wealth, health, age, colour, religion, ideology, politics, sexuality (absolutely anything) . . . . as long as you are not in breach of British law."
Except there is British law that makes it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of most of the above, so you'd automatically be in breach if you did...
"Whichever way we cut it, racism is simply not illegal any more than sexism or isolationism, xenophobia or misthanthropy is illegal."
But sexism is illegal too - in the workplace it's covered by the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, it's classed as a hatecrime, and will shortly be covered in the provision of goods and services by the Equality Act. Hopefully it'll put a stop to all those insurance companies charging women less on the premise that your biology makes you statistically less likely to crash your car...
Hopefully you can see where I'm coming from, but it's hard for me to understand how racism and being racist isn't illegal, when there's a legal framework in place that specifically makes it so.

There's been really interesting points raised here in this thread.

Here you are referring to it being illegal in terms of in the work place, or your place of business. I am perfectly with in my rights to refuse entry into my house of someone because they are black. This is still racist, but not illegal. I can have a party and say no Indians. That's not illegal.
Certain act of racism are illegal but racism it's self is not.
N.B I am using me as an example, I don't have any issues with the level of melanin in someone skin, or even how someone pronounces "grass".
-
• #75
It's not illegal to have racist thoughts, but the moment you act on them, it becomes illegal. Strictly speaking, if you denied someone entry to your party, specifically on the grounds of their race, that would be illegal.
Vou probably wouldn't be charged, as there are far bigger things for the police and CPS to be dealing with, but again, no less illegal.
I'll say it again.
