Inspired by a chat with Simon at souths last week, I am considering growing a beard for the first time in my life (I'm 26). If not had a shave for 4 days now and its longer than I would usual let it get. Slightly itchy. I've just finished a massive patch of work and going on proper holiday next week and I quite fancy a beardy project.
So is it part of being a man to grow a beard at some point? Or is it just essential in later life when you want to do some touring? Can't you just "force one out"?

I kept asking my wife to stand upside down facing the mirror so I could stick my head between her legs
She said "You kinky bastard, what are you up to now?"
I said "I'm not fucking kinky - I just wanted to see what I look like with a beard."

i like beards but mine is not thick at all when I let it grow. It's patchy too, not to mention ginger. I sometimes wonder if in time it will develop into a fully-fledged fisherman's beard. I hope so, as I would enjoy tending to it for a while. It be nice to have the option. I'd keep secret things inside it, like banker's drafts and valuable brooches. One day eh.

my missus has only seen me clean shaven once in over 4 years, she didn't like it.

hah! I shaved my beard as my missus never seen me without one, she hated it, forced me not to shave ever again for the rest of my life.

I don't think I've been completely clean shaven for at least 5-6 years. The closest I came was just lip fuzz during Movember last year and my chin felt cold :S

I dunno about that but, beards for the most part should be binary i.e. you either have a beard or you don't. There are a few exceptions to the rule and generally these guidelines work.
- Handlebar moustaches and moustaches work best when you are WWII British Army Officers, Mexicans, Texans and Motor cyclists that have a big American bike. Obviously the flowing locks of a mullet is important in getting the look. Cardigans and a Handlebar moustache cannot co-exist if you aren't a OAP. They look better with spectacles and sunglasses I have noted.
- Goatees are a no no if you have a rounded face. Goatees work best with a thinner face shape. However if you ride a Rigid Mountain bike from a reputable brand that is pre 1997 it is the law that you have a goatee, preferably ginger.
- If you are some sort of cage fighting combatant, playing the baddies cage fighting in an upcoming action/martial arts flick or are in some sort of nu-metal band you are allowed to have a goatee or a chin strip without the moustache.
- Craig David abominations and "designer stubble" are a no no .
- No Hitler moustaches.

I'm gonna grow a beard in sep when i quit my job and become a full time student again for a year. i can't grow sideburns but get a good bit of hair on my chin. i'm going to go for as long as possible without shaving. my girlfriend says she won't like it but she said that about shaving my head for the first time and she loves it now...

Beards, like tattoos, neither make attractive men unattractive nor unattractive ones attractive.
So it doesn't much matter.
Let's face it, we're all going to die soon anyway.

get a beard current project going but not over the summer as half of your face will slightly tan and the bearded will stay white (unless your not) so if you don't like it you wont be able to shave unless you want to rock 2 tone.

i can't grow a beard. mine grows on my chin ok and the moustache is fine but they don't join up and i've got practically no hair at all on my cheeks. if i let it grow it looks a like scraggy hep-cat beatnick goatie. not a good look.
equally, i'f i'm totally clean shaven i look about 15 for some reason so i tend to just keep it trimmed really short with a beard trimmer. it's quite light so it doensn't look too much like an actual designer stubble attrocity. it's the best of a bad bunch of options i think.
i've also got a total of about 12 chest hairs. i like to think it makes me more evolutionarily evolved than the hairies but if i'm honest really i'd like to be able to grow a proper beard. if i could i'd have a big old bushy one.
hey ho, you gots to work with what you got.

I grew a beard last month, loved it. But it was ginger. Had to go.
PS. I am NOT ginger.
