Is growing a beard part of being a man?

Inspired by a chat with Simon at souths last week, I am considering growing a beard for the first time in my life (I'm 26). If not had a shave for 4 days now and its longer than I would usual let it get. Slightly itchy. I've just finished a massive patch of work and going on proper holiday next week and I quite fancy a beardy project.
So is it part of being a man to grow a beard at some point? Or is it just essential in later life when you want to do some touring?

here's something I learn from my great grandfather, my family were all in the Navy and they all have a beard, when you're in seas, you're only allowed 2 weeks to grow a proper beard, if you can't, you have to shave it off.

i am quite positive this generation have shitter beards than our forefathers......come to think of it my nan's was pretty impressive too

I think it's mostly because men whose facial hair that are not well developed end up having beard, in the past it's tend to be men whose facial hair is suitable for a well endow beard (go on andy, go on son, crack a joke at that).

am sure i read somewhere it had something to do with feromones in flouride in our water, or i might have made that up, or i might be thinking of excuses for my patchy excuse for a face rug
