Which Tyres?

  • TPU tubes seem completely shite

In what way? I picked up some Wiggles cheap but not cheap in there melt down sale. I was planning on using them to bring down the weight on my slightly porky but very durable Vittoria's. Most likely going to be a fair weather wheelset.

  • In that 99% of comments I read about them are from people who have had them burst on their first ride or the valve comes away from the tube. They leak air and need constant topping up, they're single use because they're not elastic so they don't shrink back to packed size once they've been inflated. I've seen several people report that they hadn't even managed to use them because they weren't air tight out of the box and were on the nth warranty replacement before finding one that would hold air.
Mostly that they puncture, leak or go bang extremely easily though.
If I'm not mistaken, you also can't use normal patches on them so they're pretty pricey for disposable tubes that solve no problems.

  • Blimey that all sounds a bit shit. I'm too lazy to try and send them back so guess this will be an expensive experiment doomed to fail. Thanks for the warning though!

  • There are some people swearing by them so hey, maybe you'll have luck and they'll be great. Report back.

  • I was expecting mine to fail but so far no punctures and 0 problems. I can carry 2 spares now as well

  • Gravelking SS Plus checks your boxes (well they're 1.95 not 2.0 if we're being fussy)

  • Planning a bikepacking trip in the Dolomites and trying to pick a tyre that would work well for a loaded bike, covering anything from dreamy tarmack to rocking single tracks. For a similar trip last year I went with 700x45 front and 700x40 rear. Will try to add 5mm to both and see if I can squeeze them into the frame.

    Current tyre choice options:

    • Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H
    • Vittoria Terreno Dry

    Possible other options:

    • Schwalbe Overland
    • Teravail Cannonball

Any other that should be considered? Durability needs to be considered as much as rolling resistance. This will be a summer trip, so dry conditions expected.

  • Schwalbe Overland

These are excellent btw, as long as you're mostly off road. They're a bit sluggish on pure road.

  • Also quite heavier

  • True.

I'd alsow throw in Sawtooths as an option. Very durable, good on the road, decent tread off road.

The 42 comes in much close to 46 on my 21mm rims

  • Just came back from a trip to spain on similar sounding mix of terrain, used gravelking semi slick +, 700x43 and they were really great, handled road and rocks pretty good

  • Talking of tyres, anyone know what this is for? Only on one side of one of the pair of Overlands that I have. It's recessed into the tyre, maybe a mm or two deep.

  • isn't it where it gets pushed out of the mould?

  • Could be, just seems a bit thin there, and only on one of the tyres. Thought it'd be on both if that was the case.

  • Hutchison Tuareg (not sure what size, I had 650x45)
GK SK+ do 700x50 (used these for Badlands)
    Still using a Cinturato M that won't die. That's in 50mm too but I think it's 650B also.

Missus has 700C Schwalbe Ultrabite in 2" (50mm) that seems good and a Terravail but that's only 47mm I think but no issues with either yet.

  • i’m in a similar predicament to giofox regards needing a similar tyre (ideally 700/40 good for tarmac and gravel and durable) for the rear
has anyone got an odd tyre, that isn’t a g-one, they can off load on me please? ideally near camberwell as I’m badly organised and short on time before i leave x

  • I've found the gravel H lacking bite in loose corners . The terreno dry seems more reassuring.
I've only tried both 1 ride and none was my bike so maybe there was more factors involved.

  • I've used both extensively and agree with you, in my experience the gravel h are more durable and marginally easier to set up tubeless. Also feel slightly stiffer in terms of casing, which counters the added weight of a bikepacking setup, although I have tryied the Pirelli in 40/45 and the Vittoria in 33/35, so not a fair comparison

  • Vittoria are doing a 40 mm version of the Terreno Dry now (although you can't seem to get them in the UK yet).

  • Mmm. I also liked Mezcals in gravel size if that helps, decent grip, surprisingly fast in tarmac. They don't stretch very big.
Got terra speed in 45c now. Fastest gravel tire yet, but fragile

  • Yeah, even larger 45/50, hard to find it seems

  • Mezcal - yeah, heard good things, but might be overkill
    Terra speed - too fragile

  • Schwalbe g-ones are garbage in my experience.

  • I have a pair of Overlands with <100km use. I’m swapping to something more mud ready so let me know if you want them.

Schwalbe G-One Overland Super Ground Evo TLE SpeedGrip Folding Tyre - 700c X 45

  • Picked up a pair of the new gravelling SS Plus thinking they'd make nice summer tyres. The QC on them looks terrible. The join looks like it's about to split open, the line of black/brown is awful, and they have a big divot / graze in them out the box.

Prob still keep them for the pub bike though.
