  • via france and belgium not the shortest but the nicest again follow the coast, up to antwerp and beyond

  • pm me when you are going to be here

  • wow! nice idea. would love to know how long it takes you??

  • maxtm, this thread is pretty old now,

I did 'similar' this summer also,

we did birmingham to royston (hertfordshire, or cambridge) - around 120 miles, 8 hrs of cycling on one day.

then royston to harwich the next day, around 80 miles, through essex, colchester etc, fairly nice countryside riding, think we averaged around 19-20mph this day, due to the shorter distance,

arrived at harwich at like 5, got on a ferry at 11, off the other end around 6am ( i think ) - then its like a 60 miles ride to amsterdam along cycle route 1b or 1a north sea route (if i remember correctly) although, it ended up being 80 miles because we got lost -

surprisingly, the amsterdam cycle paths weren't as clearly signposted as we had anticipated ! and we ended up miles out of our way.

So from london alone, as there is pretty much only overnight ferries, its always gonna take 2 days.

3 from brum, although could have done it in 2 if we wanted to go straight to harwich.

  • I'll be doing this late december, to spend NYE in amsterdam. Current plan is London - Harwich (circa 80miles/130k), 11pm ferry, 6.45am arrival and then ride up the coast to the 'dam (50miles/80k - ish).

Planning on taking lots of maps...!

  • London-Harwich is a nightmare to do, too much traffic and just plain dangerous. Next time I'm doing this I'll cheat and take the train to Harwich.

  • I have two weeks of time off work coming up soon, and my holiday plans have been cancelled... so was thinking of doing this solo, and speding a few days in Amsterdam.

Is the London to Harwich section really that shit?
If so, does anyone have a decent alternative route to Harwich?

  • I just managed to swindle a few days off work in September so I'm gonna give this a go fixed using this route off Bikely http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/London-to-Amsterdam

    .

Anyone know if the cycle paths are tiled all the way? Not sure whether 23c tyres'll suit this ride.
