  • Since the effect of gravity is to mutually attract massive particles; and operates at vast distances ; the universe will 1 day become smaller; However, since all mutally attractive forces must have a dipole the same as a magnet - there has to be a counter to the attractive nature of gravity - i.e anti-gravity - my suggestion is dark matter - this would account for the absence of mass from the universe also - the fact that it is dark ie. not affected by light means that it may be spread as evenly as the stars and galaxies we see around us.

But. . . the important thing is how much of this stuff is out there, of the three models only one gives us a future, the odds are that it all will eventually come to a grinding halt.

  • Too much information for 3am dude

You knew what you were getting into, this is the "edgy thread".

Just look at the shit developing here already.

I'm easily distracted by shiny things.. carry on..

  • The person is ruining the shiny christmas balls by putting himself in it. How silly.

  • Is this anything to do with pop music?

  • Time is an illusion there is only NOW. There is only one birth one death.
    You are up early clive.
Milking the chickens? Waiting for the Post Office to open?

  • is anything physical infinite ? air expands to fill the space, vacuum expand to fill the void. i think nothing stays still in our universe, so is it expanding (good ) or contracting ( bad ? )

  • True; we believe he'll be up and about again in three days.

That would be an awesome start to a come back tour, the kind of press you'd get for that would be talked about for 2000 years.

  • Fuck me ! That's the kind of dark shit I am after.

Dark shit (matter) has already been touched upon.

  • Is this anything to do with pop music?

Yeah, like you'd know that if it jumped up and bit you on the bum.

  • What does everyone think about bikes.

    Good / bad ?

    utfs

  • Most people who deal with this subject fairly heavily lean towards the notion that the future is finite - quite what form the 'boundary' of time takes is less well known, but even rudimentary logic suggests that time itself is 'capped'.

using the tired example of a tree falling in a forest and there being no-one there to hear it, is it not fair to say that in the same way, time is only capped when there is no-one/nothing left to count it? time for you, for example, is somewhat capped upon your demise, but that doesn't mean of course that time has stopped.

How are you using the venerable Rev. Berkeley's 'tired' example of a tree falling in a forest? What do you think it means?

I have never seen that apparent conunrum as anything more that an issue with defining terms.

If, before you pose the question, you tell me what you mean by sound, then the question asnswers itself.

If - for example - you define sound as a vibration of the air falling on your ears and then being electrochemically (through nerve impulses) translated into the abstract we call sound in our brains, then of course if there is no one there then there is no sound.

If- on the other hand - you define sound as the dissipation of pressure waves through a medium such as water or air - then regradless of whether there is anyone there the dissipation of pressure waves through air happens, thus sound (as defined) happens.

The question is not a profundity, it is sophistry and equivocation, it is a trick question that relies on the equivocation of the word 'sound'.

. . . is it not fair to say that in the same way, time is only capped when there is no-one/nothing left to count it?

Yes, time is simply a measure of change.

time for you, for example, is somewhat capped upon your demise, but that doesn't mean of course that time has stopped.

Of course, when we die, time continues.

What I meant by: "one day [. . . ] in the very very distant future [ . . . ] we will not only be dead but will have never have existed" - was that on one outcome of the three current candidates for how our universe plays out has time being brought to a halt, when that happens there will be no 'past', so not only are we dead, but we would have never existed.

  • where are all the baby pigeons?

  • Of course, when we die, time continues.

I thought if time was relative (which I thought it was) then it stopped when we died.

  • but is time relative to us as individuals or as a ongoing collective of people/observers?
