and foot retention will take quite a bit of time to get used to, at first you'll simply find it's impossible to flip the pedal and slide in your shoes (if you're riding with clipless pedals, that have a quicker learning curve).
one thing that'll always plague cyclists, you WILL at least once in your life, fall over when clipped in due to not taking your feet out on time.
I'm in such a genious mood for some odd reason.

can't make it tomorrow henry, got a private view to attend above the funky munky in camberwell tomorrow evening. I wouldn't bother, except my work is in it, and I think I'm expected to perform with it.
I'll be there the following thursday for sure though!

brilliant thread, starts terribly, people get abused, gets derailed, goes all bike radar and highway code and has plenty of in jokes too (even an alias or two?).
its near pefect, someone just needs to gratuitously throw in the cunt word.

If you gearing is too high , you may find it difficult to skid/slow downwith the rear wheel. To slow down you should try to resist the pedals evenly thoughout the stroke. Otherwise you'll end up bobing up and down like a toddlers drag toy.
I find I can control speed with my legs safely with 48:16 gearing, but cant skid (old dog/ new tricks and all that).
Over the weekend I was running 41:23, and it took a fair while before I could slow down without skidding.
I'd get used to everything before I started skidding about, but then I'm an old fart.
Enjoy ;)

Keep the brake until you learn how to stop without it.

I'd be shitting myself if I had a Vauxhall Viva in Kiev as well...

Fire this out of a harpoon into the road. If this didn't come with your bike then take it back. Check under the saddle. You may find a box spanner there too.

Will do.
Cliveo, i don't mean to engage in a role-reversal here, but that is poor advice! You should be ashamed! It is almost exactly what I did 2 years ago, on my first outing on my first fixed gear bike.*** I woke up in an ambulance and have no memory of the entire event.***
wockawocka: don't mind the jaded anymosity - some of us are still happy to give advice, even if we've given it before.
I'm sure you've learned a lot from using the search, but in regards to your clipping in question, YES it is a healthy thing to learn to cope with from the word go. Don't be tempted to ride without foot retention. That is what put me in hospital.
