  • lets bring back patches.

    Much better idea!

Can we sew them to our swimming trunks?

  • Though i don't agree with the way he said it...i agree with what he said.

The whole thing of spokecards for drinks...i mean, c'mon.....we go to the same pub every wednesday night....let's make a spoke card to show it.

Some kind of souvenier to show you participated in a special ride or event is nice....but why not come up with something different.
Just my opinion of course, but i think spoke cards should be for what they were originally meant for.

By that logic you could argue that messenger bags should only be used by proper bike messengers.

Does anyone really care that much? It's just an affectation to show that you're part of the gang.

  • Just my opinion of course, but i think spoke cards should be for what they were originally meant for.

    Is that not ironic?

I mean... spoke cards evolved from playing cards stuck in spokes. Should playing cards have only been used for the purpose that they were originally meant for? In which case, how dare anyone stick them in their spokes.

Things evolve, it's human nature to use, re-use, create derivatives, change the meaning of, interpret, and basically just muck around with stuff without treating the original use as sacred.

I really see no problem with it. It's just a bunch of people thinking that somehow couriers are the only people who have rights to something... but why the exception to the rule? Some people ride mountain bikes on the road, some people are even riding track bikes on the road... these things aren't met with scorn... it's accepted that people will do whatever they fancy. So why treat spoke cards differently?

It's not like having a spoke card (for whatever the reason) is any kind of issue to anyone. Just a bunch of people with their knickers in a twist.

  • I don't ride with spoke cards... but now I want to just to piss people off.

  • Much better idea!

Can we sew them to our swimming trunks?

you can sew them anywhere, thats the beauty of them. and they don't peel like stickers. put them on your bag. or strap. or hat. or socks.

  • I don't ride with spoke cards... but now I want to just to piss people off.

Tape them to your seat stay for the jet engine effect, that'll drive them proper mental.

  • ....

  • By that logic you could argue that messenger bags should only be used by proper bike messengers.

not the same logic at all....messenger bags aren't something you're given when you become a messenger...that style of bag was used by paperboys long before messengers were around, they've just adopted the name because they're most commonly used by messengers...spoke cards are something you're given to show you entered and competed in an alleycat.

There are plenty of other things that could be used as souveniers.

  • Is that not ironic?

They may have evolved from playing cards, but they're not playing cards...they're spoke cards....to show that you entered a specific alleycat.

As i said, it's my opinion only...and i think there are other things that could be used.

  • So evolution of ideas should halt, the second someone feels precious about their particular use?

    Nah, fuck them.

  • Not at all....if people want to stick a card in their spokes that says which pub they drink in on the same night every week that's their call.
Which is exactly why i keep saying it's MY opinion...others can do what they like, but it doesn't mean i can't voice my opinion too....we don't all have to agree do we?

It's interesting how so many people get so stroppy on here when a clothing company supposedly jumps on the bandwagon and makes a 'fixie' bike...or a trainer company makes a 'fixie' shoe...or a company like unipac starts making cheap imitations of the bikes a large portion of this forum rides....people start banging on about how it's diluting things and how it's just them jumping on the bandwagon and doing it cos it's cool....and how it's making fixed gear into a hipster scene....and yet they don't have a problem with copying something like spoke cards, and using it to show which pub they drink in every week or which shop they buy their teabags from.
    Sigh....that's irony right their.

All MY opinion of course. :)

  • Too true.

And my opinion simply reflects my disapproval of the guy on the bike having a go at someone else about it. I dislike that aspect of anything, I think that providing an individuals actions don't consciously hurt someone else then they are free to act as they wish. I dislike seeing people being confronted for their choice being not approved and rubber-stamped by someone else. So I'll always jump in and defend people's rights to do whatever they want. Hence my doing so now, even though I personally choose not to have spoke cards. It's the whole, "What gives them the right to confront me?"... especially when it's over something so bloody daft... as I said, fuck them.

  • you can sew them anywhere, thats the beauty of them. and they don't peel like stickers. put them on your bag. or strap. or hat. or socks.

HTFU and sew 'em to your legs.

  • I already agreed that the way he spoke to the guy was wrong...it's his choice to have spoke cards...but i agreed with the guys opinion on them.

Why don't you just admit that this is really about me leaving my socks on the floor again and not putting them in the laundry basket David.

  • Sigh, quit taking it personally scott. I'm just anti-authority even when the authority is likely to be anti-authority too... I hate being told what to do, and I hate seeing people tell other people what to do. I picked up on your argument simply because it is most likely (out of the arguments made on the thread to date) to reflect the kind of view behind the confrontation in the first place. It's a dumb thing to be protective about, but for the guy to actually feel so strongly as to confront a stranger over it... nuts. People can do what they like.

  • People can do what they like.

Except the guy who wanted to voice his opinions on spoke cards? ;)

  • not the same logic at all....messenger bags aren't something you're given when you become a messenger...that style of bag was used by paperboys long before messengers were around, they've just adopted the name because they're most commonly used by messengers...spoke cards are something you're given to show you entered and competed in an alleycat.

and scott doesn't sell spoke cards

  • It's all about Spoke patches this year anyway!

  • i have my choice telephone box cards, amex, 3 of clubs and oyster car. it only goes in if its worthy.. i am not one of these sheep like Balki

  • ftw

  • Haha a mate of mine had a quality phonebox card in his bmx wheel way back before i'd ever heard of spokecards.
Good times, thanks for the reminder g-s.

I only have tweed run and vintage jersey ride 1 & 2 cards. Not a fan of wheels completely stuffed with cards but if they're reminders of good times with good people i'd hope no-one would be bothered by it. I see scott and the guy in the op's point tho, but it's just another example of the underground becoming mainstream, nothing is sacred...

  • nothing is sacred...

    Except our lord baby Jeebus.

  • He's not sacred, he married a prostitute.

  • I have my forum name on my spoke cards as a quick way of identifying me. And a nice way of adding personality to my bike. I didn't realise they were the bike equivalent to scout badges.
