My bike rusts in my flat (it's that fucking damp in here). Clean and lube. Sorted.

I dont think its very damp... maybe I just cleaned badly and left moisture on it?
You didn't blow dry? Then there's your problem.

^ Jenolite is better IMO, used it on my classic cars.

The rust on the right leg of the fork looks quite advanced.
This curve of the fork absorbs quite a lot of vibration and bears high load. This is the only portion that really concerns me.
It may be feasible to take to her with paint stripper first; followed by a 24hr soak in muratic acid.
You should only have peace of mind once you behold a completely silver and bright frame. A small brown blotch or two is not a disaster either, but should be treated further with for example: Jenolite
If the rust does not get removed, and you feel like you are pursuing the rust deeper into the metal, then: dispose of her. -

I have a newly acquired casati frame that has some surface rust:
- on the chromed lugs
- where there are small paint chips
- on the chromed forks
There is also seems to be a little rust when I look in the seat post and head post. grrrr
My problem is that I love the paint job, a marbled purple, which is quite unique. Should I follow the route of using the jelly rust remover and grease spray inside? And should I do the bath/strip thing mentioned above? Where could I have this done?
Thanks
Matt - on the chromed lugs

If you do the bath/strip thing it'll need repainting.
For removing the rust on the chrome, rub it gently with very very fine wire wool (or scrunched-up tinfoil) and apply a car wax to help prevent it rusting again (like Turtle Wax). For the paint chips, I would avoid using Jenolite or another rust remover as it tends to drip and this will damage the paint. I would very carefully sand off as much rust as you can, apply an anti-rust primer (like red oxide - spray a little into the lid and apply with a little brush), then normal primer, then topcoat - car shops sell paint touch-up bottles with tiny little brushes that are perfect for doing this, but it might be hard to find a good match.
If the paint is metallic it'll need a clear lacquer over the touch-up, too.

most of it looks pretty light. the forks look like they could have a bit more serious stuff underneath.
the drop outs look like they have snapped and been re weldedi would say the best thing to do would be to get it stripped back, treated and then re painted. you will lose the current detailing though

how do the rust removers work ...
DO they actually remove the rust or is there some kind of chemical reaction that converts the iron oxide into something else? -
• #40
Do you guys know of any powdercoaters ? in manchester or nearby .
-
• #41
Is this common to a 27years old frame?
Do i need to repaint the whole thing or repaint the affected area?
Thanks. -

^Turn the bike back over and ride it.
[perhaps a dot of grease on the blemish to keep out the winter salt]tell me thats some kind of sticker on the bb right? not a farking great crack?
-
• #43
Yeah its a sticker.
There is some kind of bubble between the downtube and bb joint.
Do i need to do sone scrubbing to id the rust? -

Tricky one, you can try the "knocking" trick, if there's an area that sounds "dull" and the rest doesn't there's definitely a problem.
I'm anal and would sand it down, then Kurust it and then put Vaseline or Waxyol on top to keep the damp out. If really anal do a peek inside but that would remove the BB.
Nail polish and Humbrol may give you a good paint match.
Opinions on this? I quite like it...but it's in Japan so a major hassle and the rust does look...not so good. Well it's been on e-bay for months...
