Chris Hoy is on my Bran Flakes at the moment. I figure if I eat enough of them I will become like him.

Anyone see Sir Hoy on 'Would I lie to you' this evening ?
He was trying to convince his opponents that he was approached by NASA and asked if he would like to ride his bike on the moon. He failed unfortunately. Funny though. -

The 34-year-old smashed up his new XKR sports car as he turned right into a main road and collided with a Vauxhall Vectra.
Yet another case of a track racer having trouble with turning right. :(

That and the brakes did for him.

Perhaps he's not such a 'White Knight' then.

Avoidance != evasion.
"Morally wrong" pfft.. everyone does what they can to minimise their expenses.
Tax thread >>> -

This is all a load of shit. If the government get caught with their pants down with a massive loop hole in tax law, they should close that loop hole and the press can draw attention to that. Judging someone's character on their good choice of accountant who exploits perfectly legal avenues to reduce taxation is entirely flawed.
We do, however, forget that we live in a society of imbeciles and the press like to entertain them.

I don't think we'd get along.

We'd probably get along fine.

I think I misread you.

I'll admit, it wasn't written particularly well.

Comparing the income of a cyclist to a premiership football player is also hilarious.

^ True. The fact that the guardian report chris on Chris Hoy as if this is a terrible thing, yet reference the fact that Premiership footballers have been doing it for years seems a little off.
-

The Guardian has been mentioning all day that Premiership footballers use these ruses. The hook for the Chris Hoy story seems to be that he was Lottery funded (until 3 years ago). And that there is a dishonesty about it all; no one can really believe that he has not 'loaned' himself this money for any reason other than to pay less tax but he won't admit that.

I can't help but wonder why Cameron picked out Jimmy Carr. Did he just feel the mood and jump aboard or did he see it as an opportunity with Carr in particular?
The bullshit/irony of Cameron's statements is so blatant to everyone no one needs mention it.
-
• #43
Cameron didn't pick out Jimmy Carr, the press did. He just passed comment.
Agree that it's not a politicians place to pass moral judgement. It is, however, their place to regulate and provide a legal framework in which this can't happen.

Interesting story.
It is not clear from the accounts if Hoy's move, which is legal, resulted in a tax saving.
What's it about again?
Individuals and reporting of individuals is not the issue - the tax system is and that's what needs to be looked at.
There are many ways in which people avoid paying tax - Historic Vehicle status for classic cars is one example. Should the press and the government start outing members of the British Mini Club?

Hoy responds, believes the Guardian article is misleading;
It loads very slowly, btw.

His statement on the BC website, which doesn't take an aeon to load;

Although I have been offered participation in tax schemes, I have lways refused to go along with thembecause I believe that if one earns sufficient money one can afford to pay tax. This is my personal view and affects me and me alone. Others may choose to do differently.
The Government are, however, on thin ice in running their campaing against the immorality of tax avoidance. From the days of Magna Carta, it has been an accepted principle of our constitution that there should be no taxation without legislation. If the legislation is inadequate, it must be amended through further legislation. The Government cannot tax at will. Given the tax dodges used by many Conservative donors, and nodoubt by many within the Government, I think that Cameron should be very quiet and start studying tax law and improving the legislation. If Thatcher got one thing right it was to simlify tax legislation. The simplification reduced the ability of clever lawyers and accountants to find and exploit loopholes.
