imagine it though...
Tynan, just think what it's like...
you go to pick it up with one hand, but even though you're a strong man, you still need to use both hands to get it off the ground...
the tyres alone probably weigh more than all your bikes put together...
even your house..

they're those dodgy things on egay.

that's the second time you've mentioned that - you can get the idea out of your head right now, mister. that there bike is the apple of my eye, and i'm a gonna keep it a while,

£199 .. that's a fantastic price.
great value for money.

it is a good price, but without seeing one in the flesh, I can only expect the components won't be very good value for money..
if you have to replace wheels and cranks in 3 months, then it doesn't represent decent value compared to a Fuji or Lambster...

yes necessarily.
go to any bike shop and see what £199 gets you.

Well, i don't think it's aimed at "enthusiasts". Lots of people just want a bike for the summer, and maybe they've seen these kinda bikes around town and want in on the action. Lots of people also just see a bike as a bike, and want to spend as least as possible because 'it'll just get nicked, innit'.
It's the Lidl of fixies.

and it might get more people enjoying riding fixed in the city!

Looks like the sort of thing that if you let it drop on the pavement you have to ask a couple of passers by to help you get it upright again.
There really is no reason for building bikes with solid tubing.

Titanium is too heavy, the bricks are made from nitrogen.

[LEFT][LEFT]Dont buy one of these!
I've bought these shitty ToysRUs bikes in the past. They are the biggest waste of money! Products like these are directed at first time buyers that have no knowledge about bikes.
They are made of the cheapest materials possible and wont last you more than a month!
After the first few weeks the bottom bracket/ crank will start to creek and all the components will start getting out of line. Things will bend and snap off and you'll end up binning the whole thing.Jokes aside from the earlier posts, do not purchase these types of bikes!
You'll only have to purchase a better bike in 1months time and be £200 out of pocket. If your looking to get a cheap fixed gear try an 'off the peg' bike like a Fuji for £300. or you'll find 2nd hand Langsters on ebay/gumtree for £200. These are great bikes for starting out and they've got resale value if you decide that a fixed gear isnt for you or you want to upgrade.

I bet I can wreck one of those bikes completly by working on it for 1 week. If I have a good week I'll go for the frame braking in 2 seperate places.
Goals not that hard to achieve....

you don't seem to understand what 'value for money' actually means
you get what you pay for.

It's almost worth a wip round to get Jos one and have him document a real life courier review of a "courier bike".
We only need 200 people to pledge 1 pound each or clearly 100 at 2 pounds each e.t.c

Using this rationale, everyone would buy their furniture from Habitat and their suits from Saville Row, their cycle clothing from Rapha. The fact that they don't means that there is definitely a market for these bikes, and that is all that matters.

Hi-tensile steel? Holy crap. That's gonna be one heavy bike. Terrible quality components throughout. A waste of money.
There might be a market for this kind of bike, but it's an exploitive market. It relies on the consumers' ignorance to fool them into thinking they are getting a good deal. In fact, they are buying a bike where everything needs a lot of maintenance to keep working at all, and will work badly regardless (not to mention the target market are exactly the people who will do NO maintenance).
Bikes like this are bad for the cycling industry, and the people who buy them. Sure, a few more people will be on the road with bikes like these. But the majority of these people will give up once the bike breaks down and they find out how much it costs to upgrade to components that won't break down immediately. We're talking about people having to replace, at a minimum, the wheels and bottom bracket, probably headset as well, maybe the brakes. They will quickly surpass the price of the original purpose.
From the perspective of value, quality, and the goal of getting more people on bikes, companies would be much more well advised to raise the price by £100 and spec some decent components. Raise is by £150 and put a decent frame on as well.
Then it's up to the cycling community and industry to educate people about why they should spend a bit more for a new bike. And if they're still on a tight budget, great--set them up on well made conversions. They'll get better components, and a unique bike.
If you want to encourage more people to ride bikes, you need to offer them lighter weight, well made bikes with decent components so that the bike is fun to ride for more than the first week. Rip them off at the very beginning and they will resent the bike and the entire industry for conning them.
See what you've done? Are you pleased with yourself?
Tynan's in the corner, crying now...
