I'll probably leave it until I have a 2" square of screen left visible, then deal with it.

• #453
Wouldn't putting your 'deal with it' sunglasses make the screen even less visible?

BQ - look at IBM Lenovo thinkpads
ThinkPads aren't what they used to be since Lenovo took over.
I've used the IBM version for years and they were robust and reliable machines.
We just got £1500 Lenovo's at work in December and the mobile users hate them.
Ill fitting batteries, cracks on the wrist rests and various unexplainable freezing.
People are asking for their 4 year old Dells back and threatening to buy their own machines.

Really? I'm using a new Lenovo T510 with no problems at all for a few months now. Intel i7 processor, 4GB ram, 64 bit OS. Like a dream. Haven't heard complaints from colleagues either.

Lenovo T410s - Same specs as yours.

completely the opposite experience I had at an old job. Were forced to replace Lenovos with dells progessively by the parent company. they were a hunk of shite, badly put together, unreliable hardware and cracking hinges all over the place, and the hardware service and support were shite. went back to lenovo, everyone's happy again.
Just goes to show some models from any given brand are good, some are crap. -

+1 to Hippy's comments.
I've replaced screens on a couple of laptops in the past, definitely cheaper than replacing the whole laptop and fairly painless. Some google fu should give some vids/instructions on how to get the cover off of your type of laptop, revealing the model number of your screen. (tbh a google search would probably give you this too) Bung that number into google shopping, ebay, etc to get an idea of price.

Cheers, looks like £85 including VAT and postage.
Just a small voice at the back of my mind saying "never invest in obsolete technology".
This voice is probably being goaded by the "buy a new toy" part of my brain.

Screen cancer--haven't seen that before.

Right, which 10.1" netbook is best?
My wish list is as follows:
10.1" screen
Well made
Good battery life
CheapAffordableI'm tempted to go for the Asus Eee 1001PXD here for £219.65, but am keen to hear about alternatives?
It'll spend most of it's operational life sat on the coffee table as the "quick access to Internet" machine, and the only reason I'm not looking at the iPad for this is I want a keyboard.

Dammit, you can have my Asus, 1005p, which is in good working order, black, couple of scratches marks on lid. 150GBP
Used it to go travelling, now surplus to requirements..

The best laptop I've ever seen is coming on to the market in a couple of weeks time:
Lenovo X220s.
http://shop.lenovo.com/gbweb/gb/en/learn/products/professional-grade/thinkpad/x-series/x220/index.html
Only the info page is currently up... the "Buy Now" link doesn't go anywhere useful. It's a laptop with:
- 12.5" IPS Screen (beats all the MacBook Pros)
- i7 CPU
- 10 hours on normal 9-cell battery, 23 hours with battery slice
- SSD
- 1.4 KG
- Fantastic keyboard
- Full hard-drive encryption
- Fingerprint reader (it's how I log on to my laptops)
- Richard Sapper design
- HD Web cam
- 3 aerial WiFi (it always has a solid signal when my peers flounder)
- Quick boot
The thing is unbelievably good... but do expect to pay around the £1,100 mark when it finally goes on sales... a little more for the SSD version.

Is i7 worth the money or is i5 good enough?
I do fuck all apart from web browse and some basic home shit.

Does anyone know where I can get a dell battery other from them directly? After a year, I'm getting a warning sign saying it's the end of its useable life and will only work if plugged in etc.

The best laptop I've ever seen is coming on to the market in a couple of weeks time:
Lenovo X220s.
Just collected my Lenovo Edge 11. Its marketed into the gap between netbooks and laptops. Which is basically what I wanted. We'll always have a desktop in the house, so I cant justify spending for loads of power. Was given the budget for an IPad (~£450), to take travelling. So I bought something 3x the weight (oops).
Intel Core i3-380UM - 1,33GHz
4.00GB RAM
320GB harddrive
11.6" HD screen
WiFi, Bluetooth, 3xUSB, HDMI, 4in1 card reader. The Intel version has a slighter weaker graphics card then I would have liked. But the AMD version was slower, with a shorter battery life. Hopefully it'll still play handy mandy at a comfortable quality.

Maybe it's not the best place to ask, but well, i'll try...
Does anyone know how to glue graphic card to motherboard on toshiba laptop?
I couldn't get it to work, took it to a computer shop and it was glued and then baked - apparently it's the only way to do that.
It came loose again and i don't feel like i wan't to pay someone again to fix it.
Any ideas which glue or paste i should use to make it work? -

Back here again budget is 400 - 450, needs to be able to play some good MMO games, good sound and webcam quality. I3 or above processor and around 4GB Ram or so.

Right- in June I'm going to be looking for a new laptop.
I no longer do any video stuff, and my photography interests have moved to film so I don't need anything more than a repository.
I'm torn between a high spec Ubuntu laptop and the eee pad transformer + cloud.I've never owned a non-Mac PC, and in fact no one in my family has so its a big step.
I realise that I'll probably have to concede some usage of exe files for certain specialist programs for data analysis, but as I understand it- Wine would help me sort this out.Basically- if anyone has suggestions for what to get- budget is c.£1k, but would prefer to spend less, and what I should be looking for, etc, and finally the feasibility of Ubuntu.
Cheers.
