but the good thing is that you can, within the default 1year warranty, upgrade to whichever warranty you want.

We as a company had (notice the past tense) 150 HP laptops.
The motherboard failed in 80% of them at around month 13/14- just out of the guarantee.
All of our servers, all of our desktops, and all of our data switches were HP.
So we phoned them up and said "Could you see your way to replacing the laptops as they are only just over a year old, and it's clear it is a widespread problem".
HP said "nah, thanks for the all the cash though".
We now have hardly any HP's.

My company is the same.. all except for the failing part.
Must be a problem with your users :P
HP FTW

Same thing happened to 500 of our Dell desktops.
Faulty motherboards, many machines wouldn't boot, some out of warranty.
Known issue but not publicised.
Dell hesitated in cooperating, so we threatened to leak the story to the press.
All 500 motherboards were replaced over the next month.

aaahhh, this is what I love about asking questions here. You get the answer you want but with an equal amount of horror stories :)
I hope the MB doesn't fail in this laptop or I'll have to sort it.

Hippo- our users are engineers, so it's quite possible that the laptops were given a tough life.
DMCZone- good PR skills, I doubt if that occured to us, and if it did I doubt we thought that HP would care. -

If a computer doesn't fail in the first week, it's unlikely to fail until years later, generally after it's time to upgrade anyway.

Actually, they'd both cause equal havoc :)

Yeah, you're right Hippy. Positive thinking!
Now, the next question is, I get the old laptop that this is replacing. Can I pimp that ride....

What is it?

Hippy- PBX engineers.

yeah but they are shit aren't they ? windows incompatible
great if you are a designer / arty type but not so good out there in the real world ? sending excel spreadsheets to your mates etc.i work in predominantly MS based company... no problems. your observation is an urban myth (effectively)

Will a MacBook Pro be the right tool for someone doing a Computer Science/3D animation/photography course?
I've done two computer science degrees and freelance photography on this macbook... nuff said (for the night and he replies)

The only way to shell out a load of cash for a pretty little aluminium box? Maybe.
meh... narrowminded

Once you've had an Apple you NEVER go back, they're so far ahead it's fscking silly. And you can run XP on them anyway !! Initial cost may be higher but resale value is much higher and cost of ownership is low. The metal MacBook is the best value lappy out there by such a long way I realise it's difficult for ppl who've never used one to understand...

I only needed the one degree. Maybe if you'd used a PC you would've got it right the first time. :)

Fuck off. My first computer was an Apple and I've been using PCs since.
Your first sentence should read:
"Once you've been brainwashed by Apple.. "Ahead in what sense?
I don't want to hack it to run XP.
I don't want to resell it. Reselling a computer before it's well out of date is just stupid.
Cost of ownership is low? WTF? How much does it cost to up the RAM in one? How much are the software packages?
Best value fail. If I want to take funny wonky photos of people in my office I'll borrow one of the CrapBooks the other guy's use. In the meantime I'll stick with my PCs. -

hey mardy-arse get the f*ck off your soap box, my second degree was an MSc in computer security. I use my computer for personal and work, it's a fast as shit, never crashes, doen't need a disk defrag, doesn't use a dirty registry system and has a proper underlying operating system and a beautiful, intuitive interface.
I think Stephen Fry put it best when he said:
'why, when people largely work within the universe of a computer, do we not use the same design flair and intelligence that passionate architects put into their best office spaces?'
I have a HP laptop that is the same speed as this fair MacBook... it takes 10 minutes to start up, this takes 20 seconds.
Out.

Oooh tetchy.. it was a joke cock bag or have you not yet worked out what a smiley is? Maybe you should go for another degree and come back when you're ready for this forum..
BTW There's something wrong with your HP config then. Even my completely fucked corporate boxes don't take 10min to boot and they have THE shittest locked down garbled group policy update this and that toss applied to them.

then use a decent operating system
I don't want to resell it. Reselling a computer before it's well out of date is just stupid.
resold two 3-year-old MacBooks, purchased for 600, sold for £400
Cost of ownership is low? WTF? How much does it cost to up the RAM in one?
£35 quid for the sticks from crucial and... does this look difficult or something?
How much are the software packages?

Best value fail.
really?

good luck.
