h, and what's with HP not enabling the front headphone port on their workstations? I have a brand new Z400 or something and the fucking headphone port LOOKS connected but does nothing. I don't imagine there's a BIOS setting for this but who the truck knows. Again.. little things that are annoying. Not as annoying as DIY mind you, but annoying.
YES! FUCKING YES! This one of the most annoying fucking things I've come across - I use this same station and I can have headphones plugged into the rear jack, headphones plugged into the front and hear sound coming from separate programmes on both AND hear a third set of audio coming from the front inbuilt speakers. What the fuck is that about?
Weirder still - say I'm using... Adobe Premiere (for example) - when I'm capturing video I can hear the sound on the capture window playing through the rear headphone jack but not the front. Then, when I'm just playing video within premiere on the timeline from a sequence, I cant hear through headphones from the rear or front jack but only through the inbuilt speakers.
This is not cool.

Another EPIC FAIL keyboard on those, I'm afraid. I had to use one of these for my first UK office job.. massive amount of brain pain when Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V don't work because some idiot has put the keys around the wrong way.
Yep, true. Surprisingly quick to rewire your brain, though.

Why use Server 2003 in the first place?
2003 64bit is still a lot faster and more stable than XP/2008 64bit at the moment.
just downloaded and installed a RTM copy of 7 64bit and still having a nightmare finding 7 x64 drivers, but at least I have SLI back :D*server 2003 was originally going to be just windows 2003 with modular components to make it server or workstation, MS deciced to just make it server but you can still revert it to be a workstation

• #232
I would've assumed Win7 x64 was better for games. More people writing graphics drivers for home users than servers ya know? I'm running the new machine with some add-on graphics card (I forget what we ordered) to run dual-head. Running VS or SQL with Outlook in the other window is hardly graphically instense though :)

Nvidia/ATI drivers used to support 2003 as they thought like everyone else it was going to be a workstation/server release, MS changed their mind at the last min and bullied the gfx companies into removing SLI support so they could push XP/Vista sales (as I found out today grnph!) yeah 7 x64 is prob the way to go but as thought its still hard to get all the drivers ..even tho the OS has been out for months!
might just buy a xbox

drivers for what Hael ?
I'm using Win7 x64 with no driver problems, except for the AMD AHCI HDD driver which is a bit shit to say the least, but works regardless. -
• #235
Cheers Dylan, I got it sorted using Vistx x64 drivers :D - now to do the laptop......

So do I, unfortunately the premium you pay for it these days is pretty painful.
This is the spec of my latest project, would have cost me about £2k if it was Mac hardware.
I like the hardware design of Mac - the lightyup-keyboard thing is cool.

• #240
shitload for a Mac, it's a bit annoying that their laptop use graphic card that was perfect 2 years ago, while cheaper laptop (like Sony) have a 1GB graphic card as standard.

someone convince me that computers are ever fucking cool.............
give me a bike any dayStop being a fucking twat ... computers are fucking cool .. they have made the world a smaller place ... they have brought people together that may have never met ... the interenet has allowed anyone to learn about any subject they want very easily ...
:( .... NOB END
PS: they have made problems that were previously unsolveable possible because of they can do calculations faster than a man can ... (big example is the orbit of the moon (thus calculating the tides, proper impotant to fisher man)). Stop with the bike will solve everything stuff.
PSS: If you want to ride ur bike and not consider computer ... delete ur bank account, quit ur job, don't buy anything ever, etc etc etc ... computerization has a hand in everything you buy, do, or even move .... so just sit somewhere and die if you don't like it.
PSSS: I would have never got a job if not the fact I know computers.
PSSSS: You would not be posting the stupid arsehole reply.

I don't think m.f meant 'cool' as in the whole concept of computer (the purpose of it especially), but moreof the actual machine itself that people take unpacking photos of their latest 6th Macintosh because it's 500MHz faster than the last one, and treat them better than human being.
If that what he meant, then I agree with him wholeheartly, they're simply just tools.
oh and computer are responsible for this kind of english;

I think he just discovered that it's actually harder to go up a hill on a singlespeed than an 8 speed bicycle.

It was a arsey comment, I am a proper geek and like all things technical being computers, cars, bikes etc, and I enjoy mucking about with web technology ... it is fun and I like doing my job ... It direct attack on people that enjoy doing something which engages their brains.
Yeah it ticked me off good and proper.

Running windows on a Mac isn't in emulation mode - it's running natively on Intel chips ?(my understanding). A year or two ago (i.e. before Windows 7) PCWorld did a test of laptops to find the one that ran Vista fastest, and it was Mac which pissed them off a bit as they only included Mac for a larf.
When I did a price comparison (a while ago) as close as poss spec for spec, Dell was £200 cheaper than Mac and Viao £500 dearer. But both are Windows machines so go figure.
