• Measure (using vernier calipers) from the right side of your chainring to the left side of your seat tube,
    • then measure from the left side of your chainring to the right side of the seat tube,
    • add these values together
    • divide by 2
    • et voila there is your front chainline

Your rear is most likely going to be 42mm so get the front as close to that as possible.

  • A shame, I haven't even ridden it yet!

Ride it - you can always hear chain noise in a quiet room with your head next to it, but on the road, you might not hear it at all.

  • Sounds like the chain. I have a KMC D-101 that makes a similar noise, even though the chainline is perfect and it's not too tight. You might find that some lighter lube quietens it down a bit.

  • 1: Fit Wipperman galvanised chain (1Z1 or 7Z1, according to width required)
2: Bask in the eerie silence

  • Whoever mentioned saddles making noises, just been driven mental by a metallic 'ticking' noise that sounded tinnier than cranks, was convinced it was another crack in my frame. Decided to live with it until something visually obvious showed it was that, but replaced my saddle during that time. Noise stopped, problem solved.

  • Spent most of today learning everything there is to know about Truvativ Howitzer bottom brackets to try to get rid of a really annoying noise when putting a lot of force through the pedals.

Removed and reinstalled the BB with grease etc, several times. Took the entire thing apart even down to removing the sealed bearings, removing the seal, cleaning them in petrol, drying, regreasing and reinstalling.

    Still the crack/creak.

Tightened and retrued the rear wheel (mebbe spoke creak). Didn't stop it.

Tightened up the rear cog and spacer set. Didn't stop it.

Finally decided to strip and rebuild the pedals. I started to take one of them off and it wasn't in really tight like I normally install them. Tightened them both, and the noise went away.

30 seconds to fix something that had eluded me for about 4 hours.

I'd have been pissed off had I not learned some interesting stuff through my multiple fails.

  • I’ve got a very irritating clicking sound that I think is coming from my back wheel. It’s intermittent, but is probably happening about 80% of the time.

I’ve tried to rule things out: It happens when I’m freewheeling and/or pedalling. With my feet on pedals and with no feet on the pedals. It doesn’t matter what gear I’m in. The brake pads are certainly not catching the rim. The mudguard is well clear of the tyre. Standing up / sitting down makes no difference (so it’s not the saddle / seatpost). When I flip the bike over and rotate the pedals it doesn’t happen, but it can be heard when pushing the bike forwards and backwards. The wheel is new (less than 3 months) and the cassette was fitted properly by my LBS. There is no side to side play in the wheel and it's fitted straight in the dropouts.

Can anyone suggest what it might be or what I should be checking for. It’s really quite annoying. Thanks.

  • Does it happen if you push it on one wheel only?

  • I've not tried that so will give it a go tonight. What would a one wheel problem (or not) suggest to you?

  • That one wheel is OK and the other isn't.

Spokes, hub, something loose inside the rim, loose nut on the presta valve, wobbly nipple?

At least it would give you somewhere to focus your attention, although you'll probably discover it's something completely unrelated after spending hours investigating

  • I fitted a new BB the other day, to replace the Miche one that was making a serious creaking sound.

It feels a lot smoother and stiffer now, but I've got a new noise issue.

When I'm pulling away, and under heavy pedalling, there's a really high 'ting ting' noise from the chainset or BB. I thought at first it was a shoelace end on a chainstay, as it makes exactly that sound, but I tried it with a different pair of shoes with no laces, and a different pair of pedals, and it's still there.

    What could it be?

  • Crank not fitted properly, really need to bolt 'em up tight

  • crank fitted properly, new bb is narrower. under heavy load load crank is hitting chainstay.

  • Is it geared? If so, could be front mech cable end getting slapped by cranks.

  • Is it the Dolan? If so, I think 6pt might be on the money.

  • It is the Dolan, and as such is not geared.

The new BB has actually pushed the chainset a bit further away from the chainstay, so it isn't that, though I have seen that's an issue on a lot of Dolans and was on mine too. Also I think the noise is even more tinny and 'tingy' than that would be. It sounds almost insignificant, it sounds just like what BMMF said, thought it can't be that.

I will try tightening the crank bolt a little more, as I haven't re-checked it since I installed it, and since then I've done a track session and Highgate Hill.

Could it be something to do with incorrect BB installation? I'm pretty sure I've done it alright, although I'm always hesitant to trust my own skills in things like this. When I look at the cup on the BB shell, it doesn't look quite straight, though that might just be my own paranoia, and the chainring seems perfectly straight. Should I take it apart and put it back together again?

  • How 'bout chainline? Could it be links tinging against the teeth because there's a slight misalignment?

  • Hello,

When I pedal, there is a constant clicking noise from the bottom bracket
area. I have taken it to bike shops and I have tried replacing parts, however it hasn't stopped. I've begun to believe there may be damage to the frame.

Wondering if someone has had/solved a similar problem, or knows someone who can.

    Cheers,
    Max.

  • I had this, turned out it was my hip

  • which parts have you replaced?

  • is the noise generally coming from the left side crank - pedal with only one foot to see

do you have square taper bb? if the cranks were not done up tight enough to begin with they may have come loose

if the left hand side crank did come loose then it may have become slightly deformed in which case you may need a new lhs crank arm

  • Is your shoe catching on the crank?

That aside, beware the click may sound in the bb area but be from elsewhere, check all bolts, something may be a bit loose.

My road bike had clicking recently, turned out stem faceplate bolts needed 1/4 turn.

  • There is already a thread dedicated to this with a thorough and comprehensive list...
