• I thought about that - it'll throw the chainline out by about 6mm, unless I can get a spacer in there.

  • To save the hassle, it sounds like a new sprocket is the way to go - unless you're well hard up, that is.

  • I doubt it'll be of interest, but I have a 13T 1/8" sprocket designed to go on a freehub-type splined body. Bought it and realised it was too chunky for my chain so it's unused.

  • yeah, ditched it a while ago and went for a dura-ace. hopefully this one will last a bit longer.

  • Cheers for the offer. would require a spare wheel with splined free-hub which I don't have at the mo :)

    Thanks for the offer though.

  • So heres the deal

i was cleaning all the winter dirt and grease off my rear hub (dia compe) with de-greaser and after popping my wheel back on my bike with a new chain it started making this horrific semi-grinding rattle noise. it happens for the most part only when i push down on my pedals, and only when biking forwards. especially when pushing down hard the rattle becomes very loud, and high pitch almost like a creak. and i can also feel vibrations of the rattle through the pedals as well. if i take my feet of the pedals and let the bike "coast" the sounds goes more or less away.

i tried switching to a different wheel and the noise went away, so it definitely seems wheel related. and as far as i can tell the sound seems to be coming from the hub area
i thought that maybe i got degreaser in the bearings and messed them up, and the wheel didnt spin very smooth and felt dry so i had new bearings put in at my LBS.

i just got the wheel back today, popped it back on, and lo and behold that f*cking horrific sound is still there

as far as i can tell there is nothing loose or rubbing

i need the wheel for tomorrow and my LBS is closed till tuesday so i cant go there for help

anyone have an idea what it could be? im going absolutely nuts here

  • ok i think i figured it out. i put the wheel on my other bike to see if that helps to diagnose whats wrong and the noise is gone. so somehow its the combination of that wheel with my crank and new chain. seeing as the chain is the only new factor since the noise started im going to have to assume its that.

however: i used that chain with a loaner wheel for the last week while the wheel was getting repaired, all without any problem. everything is 1/8 size so why the noise?
i have a feeling there is some sort of simple explanation which basically boils down to me making some sort of noob mistake. does someone have an idea? id like to figure this out before i buy a new chain and (possibly still have the same problem on my hands)

  • Could it be the BB? Or new chain on old sprockets? Is the chain too tight? Is it lubed?

  • i dont think its the BB. ive been using the same bike with a loaner wheel for the last week and no problems. which is part of the reason why i thought the problem was with the wheel in the first place

the chain wasnt too tight. i thought that might have been the reason at first too but the creaky rattle noise its making is waaay louder than taut-chain rattle

    chain is cleaned and lubed

my brother has a brand new chain lying around. im going to try that out as thats the only thing i can think of at this point

    finding this all very odd

  • I don't think the new chain is liking the old sprocket.

    Get yourself a new sprocket.

  • well just tried a new chain with no improvement. the cog doesnt look particularly worn but i think you may be on to something. would also explain why it works ok with my other bike (also old chain).

i still have the old chain, albeit without the original quick release link. can i use a new quick release link (from a different brand) with an old chain as a quick fix for the weekend?

  • Yep

  • seems to be working fine now. many thanks Pifko

so relieved this worked. spent the whole day fiddling with this while silently raging to myself

  • Uh, yeah, glad I could help..

Could it be the BB? Or new chain on old sprockets? Is the chain too tight? Is it lubed?

  • apologies Hippy, ive been operating on a pretty bad lack of sleep the last couple of days and i must have read over you suggesting the same thing. I definitely appreciate any and all feedback given :)

  • Hey Guys

Had this problem for a while and its driving me nuts. Clicking noise at even intervals coming from the drive train area. Changed the BB, greased, fitted perfectly - noise still there.

I pedal and the noise appears then back pedal, pedal again and its dissapeared. The clicks are sometimes frequent, sometimes further apart. I'm assuming it has to be either the chain or the crank? Could it be a cheap chain? Argh!

  • try to change the pedals for a day

  • Tried that - no change. Just to add, it only happens when I'm on the bike. No cracks in the frame also!

  • take out all the chainring bolts, clean them and put them back

  • Had a bizarre creaking noise appear on my bike, creaking whenever my left crank was pointing downward, only when pedalling hard. Thought it was coming from the drivetrain area, so disassembled/regreased/assembled back together BB, cranks, chain, chainring bolts, pedals etc etc. Still happening, driving me insane. Then today I finally tracked the goblin creak, it is my saddle flexing and rubbing on a seatpost clamp bolt. Only way to fix is new saddle I reckon.

  • I have had a problem with a creaking which sound much like yours, haven't been able to get rid of it so i think i will have to look at the possibility of it being my saddle as-well. Cheers

  • Hate to awaken an old thread, but I'm having some tractor troubles:

Rear Surly cog 17t, front Miche 49t and PC1 chain = no noise
Rear EAI 18t cog, front TA 49t and PC1 = no noise
Rear Condor 16t, front TA 49t and PC1 = no noise

Rear Phil wood 18t, front 50t Miche, PC7 chain. = lots and lots of chatter. But other than that it works fine and chain tension is great and more even than the other combos (the cog and chainring are perfectly round).

Difference here is the PC7 chain, and also the Phil wood cog seems to have more pointy teeth than other designs (and yes, it is brand new along with chain and front ring). Does the PC7 take longer to work in? Maybe the clatter is just from that sappy grease that new chains ship letting go of the rear teets. It's also the first time I've run an even number on front and rear rings. Apparently, if you do this and mark the teeth you can later run a new chain with the same rings without issue (do I have that right? - it seems to make sense).

Anywho.. Anyone running a rear Phil and is it loud?

  • Ancient thread! You know what the most annoying noise on a bike is? A dodgy cotterpin on cottered cranks. It sounds like a tiny steam train - CLUNK clunk clunk clunk CLUNK clunk clunk clunk CLUNK clunk clunk clunk WOO WOOOOO.

Well it doesn't go woo woo, actually.

  • Also, as 'noise weeny' doesn't alliterate in the same way that 'weight weeny' does, can I suggest changing the title to 'noise nancy' instead?

  • actually yes, I enjoy it when bike is quieter. even conversion fixed is nice and quiet (silent apart from slightly worn chain), then when you go back to full on mtb you have tyre hub, frame hum (monocoque), bar hum (carbon), lever rattle (many many accidents have stretched it), pedal click (dry grease), chain rattle, fork damper, shock damper, gear cables rattling and me panting because by comparison its like riding a motorbike with no engine.

tumbleweed, i've had a similar thing, only it wasn't just chain noise it was slippage. I think it was a sram 970 cassette (new that day), middleburn c'rings (new that day) and a shitemano xtr chain (new that day), also fitted new jockeys from the big spares box. needless to say, LATER that day I was riding with connex chains again (3 of them in rotation).
I guess sometimes there are combinations that for what I can only assume are tolerance issues, don't work.
