  • i think it goes with out saying that helvetica is a fundamental part of our visual culture, it is integrated into our lives, it is easy to read, whats wrong with it ? it does what it says on the box.

  • What's wrong with Gill Sans, unless you don't like Eric Gill

In my view, you can tell a lot about an organistion by its typeface

Beware of any where using times roman 11pt...

  • I think Helvetica is lovely. Overused but beautiful. Overused because it is beautiful. And versatile.

There are no irritating details that jar, which cannot be said of Arial (puke), New Johnston, Gill Sans/Humanist 521 or Grotesque.

In the British Museum there are large signs, some in Helvetica, which look crisp and attractive, and some near them in Arial, which look irredemably shit.

Century Gothic is quite nice too. And Microgramma/Eurostile. And Eras is due a comeback I reckon.

  • i think not. futura is nothing like as versatile as helvetica.

My road bike is more versatile than my Jackson.
Aesthetically, the Jackson would not cross the road to piss on my Moser if it was on fire.
PS. The Jackson feels better as well

I reckon he's thinking of Arial. Helvetica is a positive joy compared with that turd-on-paper

  • and helvetica has some of the most beautiful number set of any font. they're incredibly graceful.

  • oh and any font that has weights that go from 25 ultralight to 95 black can't be anything but good*

    *exception: frutiger

    +1

  • Any font that has been excepted as an MS system font has effectively been torn from its middle class cul-de-sac, bummed and pushed out of the car whilst its still moving. Left to bleed and die unceremoniously.

  • I really liked the film and intend to buy it for prosperity. There, I said it!

  • I like helvetica, interstate is nice also..

  • absolute bollocks

using that kind of thinking then everyone would have the same bike [it's only there to get me from a-b] and be wearing orange boiler suits [I only need something to keep the rain off my skin]

Well Wim Crowell said as much and he can't be wrong.

I think you've missed the point. Bikes can look how they want but they're always made with steel/alu tubing. Clothes can express all-sorts but they're made of cotton, not chickenwire. Which art school did you go to?

  • Wim Crouwel also said that he would only use the colour blue and if you check out mode en module you'll find that his pallette is much broader than that

You should check out some of his highly expressive typefaces he used as part of the SM exhibition posters and there's a great series of identities he did that heavily allude to the Bodoni poster font

Which art school did you go to?

Point 1 - Clothes are made of wool, nylon, cotton, bamboo, metal, silk [there's a lot of great typefaces out there that communicate differently and aid the reader]

point two - why does it concern you what art school I went to? how are you trying to validate your argument by this?

    1. Well that's where we differ, I guess.

    2. I'm just interested.

  • Akzidenz Grotesk FTW!

  • I love Helvetica in all it's guises, but there's loads of great fonts out there, each with it's own application.

Anyone checked out Fontstruct? Design, upload and download new fonts.

  • To be fair CG I think it's a very different discussion between the balance of clarity and expressiveness in communications and the rather haphazard use of typefaces [this applies to both Helvy 'oohh let's default to it because it's dead clean and modern' and to the 'let's use some wacky typefaces, what do you mean you can't read it?']

I adore Helvy but you can put fine silk in the hands of certain people and they'll still make a shellsuit of it… I kind of rankle against Helvy being used as a very lazy shorthand

  • I guess one man's opinion is another man's "absolute bollocks".

  • I'm always suspicious of any designers who use typefaces to express anything.

Big statements evoke big reactions :^]
