  • On my way to work this morning there was a bad accident in Peckham, at the corner where the Burger King is. A massive lorry was stopped there, he had been in the process of doing a left turn and hit someone.

There was a lot of police blocking the area, ambulances and firemen... The firemen were crawling under the trailer to get to the victim. Because of course there was no access to the scene, I don't know if it was a cyclist, a motorcyclist or a pedestrian that was hit. There are armys of kids here in the morning, it's a very crowded place...

I talked to another cyclist who was there and he said to me that it is not impossible that there was more than one person that was hit...
It really looked bad, sorry I can give more details...

  • Shit, hope all are ok. This is getting far to common.

  • I was about to post this too, was not a pretty scene and really gave me a nasty chill. It was a huge lorry turning into a pretty small road. fingers crossed it wasn't as bad as it looked.

  • Shit, hope all are ok. This is getting far too common.

Yes unfortunately, this is exactly what I felt when I saw that...

  • :(

  • fingers crossed

  • Sound horrific.

  • Hope things work out ok for those involved.

  • Went past this also. Looked horrific.

Talked to a fireman who said it was a cyclist. She's alive but in a very bad way apparently.

  • That sounds horrible. Hopefully less bad than it sounds.

  • fingers crossed for all involved, hope whoever is involved is ok.

This has put my near miss with a blind taxi driver in perspective this morning.

    ride safe people

  • Peckham High Street closed both ways between the B215 Peckham Hill Street junction and the Bellenden Road junction in Peckham, because of a serious accident. Diversion in operation.

Still closed. very sad i hope it's not fatal

  • went pass it just after it happened, fire trucks was still on there way.
her legs were under the wheels :-(
Did not see a bike? think it was a pedestrian

  • I went past on my way east this morning. Cyclist taken to hospital before I went by (9.30), bike well and truly mangled under the first set of back wheels, if that makes sense. Lorry was a big container type thing, not a 40-footer I don't think, but there was one attached to the cab, non-articulated, and then another container behind, but articulated. I took a photo on my phone but felt bad, so I haven't posted it. Big blue tent on the inside of the lorry. Spoke to a nice copper who was just standing around, the usual "I don't know anything" malarkey. Press were there, as were the road traffic investigation team. Fingers crossed, this is really starting to take the piss - two blokes hit by police cars in the last day or so, and now this. God knows what the driver was doing turning left down there though, Bellenden Rd is tiny for that size vehicle and doesn't really go anywhere except lidl - delivery driver possibly?

    Take care everyone.

    Edit - fat finger typing

  • All the best to anyone involved, hope the cyclist pulls through.

  • God knows what the driver was doing turning left down there though, Bellenden Rd is tiny for that size vehicle and doesn't really go anywhere

There is a Lidle supermarket just behind there, possibly a delivery?

I agree with you, and we all feel that way, the accumulation of recent accidents is really worrying, this is awfull...

  • ^Agree with Bellenden Road. Doesn't really lead anywhere, apart from the Lidl, no? Or the post collection office.

That bit or road sucks ... the strip past the red lights in front of Peckham library up to that junction is laid out so you think you can pull past on the left, as it grows a bit wider, but then narrows down just where the junction is. My thoughts go out to the people involved.

  • It's a terrible junction and my girlfriend cycles over it every day to get to Melon Rd.

  • sounds grim

hope they make a speedy recovery

  • Went past around 9am and saw the lorry, a blue tarp, blood on the ground and something mangled under the wheel (wasn't sure if it was a bike at the time).. I would have stopped to ask what had happened but was on my way to an exam..

On the way back just now the roads are still blocked off and the investigation team are doing measurements and picking stuff up, including what was definitely a badly mangled bike. Briefly spoke to a policeman who said that the woman involved has been taken to hospital but I'm not sure of her condition. Hopefully the A&E being so close will raise the chances of recovery.

This is the first time I've seen the result of an accident of this kind and it certainly wasn't pleasant, all the best wished to the lady in hospital.

I will say that the road just before that junction begins wide and narrows at the junction itself. Traffic is also usually slow moving there so I can see how it could encourage a cyclist to nip up the inside of vehicles, which looks to have been the case on this occasion.

  • This sounds terrible.

    I'm hoping for the best.

  • From Londonist;

It's been a bad year thus far for the relationship between [lorries](http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23693677-details/Cyclist+dies+in+hit-and-run+with+lorry/article.do) and [lady](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1168705/Woman-cyclist-crushed-death-lorry-turning-busy-roundabout.html) [cyclists](http://www.londoninformer.co.uk/london-news/london-local-news/2009/02/06/woman-run-over-by-lorry-in-notting-hill-gate-113489-22870974/). This morning a woman was knocked off her bike by a lorry turning left into Bellendon Road in Peckham. Police at the scene say that the hospital 'is doing all they can to help her': the mangled remains of her bike were too poignant for Londonist to go photograph - we are but amateur bloggers rather than hardened newshounds. Peckham High Street is likely to remain closed for another hour or so. Boris really needs to [do something](http://londonist.com/2009/04/cyclists_allowed_to_run_red_lights.php) a bit sharpish if his [Summer of Cycling](http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8068016.stm) is to get off the traffic lights.

  • fucking hell. :-(

  • I was thinking this morning "what a beautiful day to be riding a bike". Suddenly it is not so nice. Here's hoping that she will be alright.

  • Best withes to the cyclist, I hope this one day turns into a distant memory as one of those things you survived.
