I am glad the moustache sans beard look has been saved for the Frenchies. And wanted you to know I did the 5hills on Monday in honour of my Etchingham comrades. Have you been to the hotel rois mages in Montgenevre yet? they did use to serve the G...
Good luck on Ventoux. And MORE SHOTS OF TEA-DRINKING. why break the habit of a lifetime?

Nailed Ventoux. Loved every mile of it. weather was hot but extremely windy which kept us cool. unlike huez there were no dark moments and this was a beautiful climb. we both felt strong throughout the ascent.
jonny posted 1hr 55 and tim made 2hrs 45 seconds. not bad considering the force of the wind up there and the riding we've done so far this week.
top speeds on a magnificent descent.......jonny 46 , tim 49mphmore info tomorrow, bit knackered as we drove back to briancon and managed to watch united lose on the way.
life doesn't get much better than this thoughp.s. Tom's doing just fine

how odd that the two mountains we really came to climb should actually turn out so opposite to what we expected. Huez.....a battle from start to finish. that mountain did everything it could to prevent you reaching the top alive. Ventoux...welcoming, beautiful, never too outrageous and calming. huez felt like you were clinging to the side of a mountain for dear life. ventoux is open and visible from afar, huez is not only far down at the bottom of a gorge but to 'enter' (for this is how it feels when you turn into the first hairpin) it you are stood at the bottom trying to figure out where the road is and how it goes up.
ventoux was windy as hell above the trees. as you approached the top of the tree line you could hear the wind and it sounded like the surf. it really was like the sound as you sleep on a beach in new zealand. ventoux was exposed but that just made it different and awe inpiring. ventoux wa surrounded by bike lovers and had lots of stuff for sale at the top. huez was almost hostile and had no hint of it being the greatest tour climb except for some shitty hairpin signs ( i freely admit we did not hang around to see if there was a cyclists love in bar/shop/museum)
anyone coming to do ventoux.........relax it is magnificent
antone coming to do huez..........don't climb on a hot afternoon.....and be prepared to do battle

Great pics and some considered words, Tim.
It's funny, but for me Ventoux is a hostile place and Alpe d'Huez a calm, peaceful place. I think it depends a lot on the weather and the expectations you have. I've ridden the Alpe in very different conditions and at different stages of a ride and it can be straightforward or the hardest climb you've ever done.
I've only done the Ventoux once, and swore it was a once in a lifetime experience as it was an unrelenting slog for no scenic reward, but it looks like I'll be returning to it this summer to ride the Etape.
