  • Did you get the XL?

The reason it's small is I tried to have my inflatable matt in there too. And sleeping bag. Even with my down sleeping bag, everything it too close and the bag just gets wet from condensation.

If I use my Rab Ascent, I can get my sleeping bag and big inflatable matt in there and have loads of room, can even store gear by my feet easily. I can get dressed in it. So for day in day out, it's way more practical. I sleep out in the pouring rain in this bag, never wet. Woken up and I'm in a puddle and no water gets in. It's fantastic for a proper good bivi. But it is bigger and hevier. But when you're already taking 400g for a bivi what's 200 more for having a really good one.

Even if I wanted a fast bag for power naps, I'd demand a full close zip to keep the bugs out.

  • No, I got the normal one. Maybe with a matt and a bag inside it might be too small. Need to try it to find out. I need to buy a smaller bag and matt anyway (see Sleeping Bag thread). Might try just using a down/Polartec jacket.

Everyone is different. ie. Jesse won it using a feckin' emergency bivvy and a jacket.

  • Down jacket (which you'll need for riding) and half sleeping bag. Or just wear leg warmers and down jacket and hat.

Yeah until you get out there and really try it, you won't know what you can deal with. Me? I can sleep totally rough with nothing and I'm happy enough. But I remember the first time I went away. Fuck I had so much stuff. Every time since I took less and less. You learn more about yourself and what you're happy with and what limits you can push. Last time I went touring, it was with a silk liner and rab bivi and inflatable matt. And even then I slept out without the bivi a lot when it was nice.

  • How does a down jacket cope with sweat (also, rain) though? I figured that's why Jesse went synthetic because down doesn't cope when it's wet?

  • Sorry. I use arcteryx polartec. Still effective at warming even if wet, but shouldn't get wet if you take a proper rain jacket.

  • Now you want me carrying a rain jacket?! What next? A kitchen sink?!

    ;)

  • Carry a rain jacket and you don't need a bivi.

  • I still have legs.

O.K. if you're careful, I used them as a small sleeping bag in audaxes, but I kept the jacket clean and dry in a handlebar bag.

Sweat isn't really a problem, just cool off a bit and put it on.

  • Also really need inflatable mattress, it a major contribution in keeping you warm, not just for comfort.

  • I'm not careful. Synthetic it is.

  • Bro, do you even weight weenie?

Jesse used a small foam pad. I have an inflatable 3/4 matt from touring but it's still too big.

  • Bro, do you even weight weenie?

Yes I did, that why I went with an inflatable mattress that's the size of a coke can.

    Only recommended for the summer.

  • Do you sweat a lot when you sleep? Down's alright if you can dry it out - possibly ok in the US in summer...

Personally I've stuck with Primaloft for insulated clothing, it stays warm when it's wet and dries quickly - if you're on a budget/not sponsored, buying for long-term use and in UK conditions I really struggle to justify buying down stuff.

Rab vest weighs ~190g, Patagonia jacket ~270g with a hood. Both wash easily if needed. The pack size is larger than down for both, but the Primaloft Gold stuff in the vest especially is really warm. I've slept in both without a sleeping bag and used as an extra layer with a 2 season bag and been fine, I think I'm a pretty warm sleeper.

  • I was thinking more along the lines of, get off bike, go to sleep covered in sweat, muck, rain, etc.

How does Primaloft compare with the Polartec stuff? Too many feckin' materials!

This is what Jesse used: http://www.bergfreunde.co.uk/hagloefs-lim-barrier-pro-hood-synthetic-jacket/

  • In short primaloft is considered to be warmer, polartec alpha "breathes" better.

Primaloft comes in different grades - "Gold" (formerly "One") has the best warmth/weight.

  • I sweat all the time anyway. Being cold though sucks. I'll look for primaloft gold options.

  • pls cahnge ur username to 'jesseee'

after you've extracted your head from his arse

  • I've got one of these. Welcome to try it out.

If you can sleep on your back, it'll be fine.

  • What else am I supposed to base my pack list on you fucking cockwomble? He's the only person I know who's raced it, won it and posted his whole kit list and I'm a total noob at this shit.

  • One of the Klymit Inertia X Lite Short Mats? Reckon a simple foam mat would be quicker to just throw down and lay on rather than inflating, sticking into bag, etc?

  • Yeah inertia x wave. Not much in it time wise. Which ever your find more comfortable would be best.

  • Do you even need a mat? Finding soft ground or just being tired has worked for me, I assume I have a little more "natural padding" than someone like @skinny though...

Josh Ibbet mentioned using his shoes as a pillow and it being comfortable, I've tried it (and sleeping with my head on the edge of a 29er tyre/wheel), couldn't move my neck the next day time, the tyre was equally uncomfortable. No silver bullet with these things...
