Lightweight tent recommendations?

  • I would get one of these http://www.sixmoondesigns.com/tents.html , cheap depending on the material you get, very lightweight and great for tall people (something important for me). Not actually tried one so could be crap but look like a good idea anyway

  • Not sure if it has had a shout yet but I toured Ireland with a Vango Banshee 300 which was awesome, and has withstood some hectic weather. I looked at the 200 as well which is lighter but a bit snug for two - however would be great for one person and is sub-2kg.

For £75 you can't go wrong, google and ye shall find.

I used a banshee 200 for my ride from london to turkey. there were two of us for the first month and it was very snug. No porch either so tricky cooking in the rain, but managed to bodge a porch with the door tied to trees with string. A decent tent for the price I think.

  • The 300 has a little flap at the front you can shelter a stove under if your stove is really, really small. Point taken though, porches can be useful.

Meant to say earlier, I am 6'4" and fit in the banshee so it works for tall people.

  • Depending on the weather you'd probably be ok with just a cheapo from anywhere. So long as It's light. Even better if the weather permits can you make do with a bivi bag?

  • I'm on the hunt for my long-trip long-term-investment tent.

Anyone know of anywhere in/around London that stocks Hilleberg?

Cotswold Outdoor - I got a Nallo 2GT from them a couple of years ago.
Top tip: join the Ramblers and you get a 20% off voucher for Cotswold. I used mine for the tent. Check they'll let you first though cos they were a bit sniffy about me using mine until I had a temper tantrum at them.

Just the tent I'm thinking of. How do you like it?

  • I'm not a tent expert, and I haven't used it in extreme weather conditions or anything, but it's very light, very roomy, easy to put up, and hours of research when I was considering whether to spend that much on a tent suggested it laughs in the face of storms. Plus you can get a bike in the porch (although more than one bike gets a bit complicated). There are loads of reviews on the CTC forum from people who've done more adventurous touring with them.

  • if you have a tent of around 2-2.5kg, you can easily get below 2KG if you replace the poles and pegs for aluminum, and ditch the repair kit and other extraneous parts. i just got the parts from millets, but you can probably get even lighter and cheaper parts on the net. my tent is advertised at 2.4, but its now down to 1.6kg, but i did go as far as replacing the guylines and metal tension adjusters for lighter weight. a cut down rubble sack is lighter than the origional tent bag. anal weight weenie stuff.

Ive just done a tour where me and friend split the tent between us. i carried the outer and pegs, he carried the inner and poles. i think this is the best way to travel, but obviously you need a riding partner.

  • Does anyone fancy a spot of cycle camping?

  • Just the tent I'm thinking of. How do you like it?

Likeswise I've got one, perfect for cycling touring as you can fit two bikes (without wheels) inside the porch and it has the weight of a bivi but the luxury (oxymoron I know) and comfort of a large tent. Can't fault it, fit perfectly on top of a pannier rack

  • Vango Banshee 200 for £80 in Cotswolds just now - 2Kg

Or the Vango Force 10 Helium 200 looks good at approx £180 ish online - 1.3Kg - similar to Laser Comp

  • Hi! I have a Jack Wolfskin and is really good.

  • I've been looking at the High Peak minilite as recomended in the Ultralight bicycle touring blog;

Seems good for the money and very light weight which is key for me as I'll be packing as light as possible.

Or would the gelert solo be a better option? It's a better colour imo for stealth camping.

  • I'll be reporting back (if I survive) on my experience of a Gelert Solo after this weekend. I'm heading over to Oxfordshire for the ancient bike rally at Benson and will be christening the new tent at a nearby site.

  • Nobody seems to have mentioned the Vango Spectre 200 in here (as opposed to the Vango Banshee 200).

I was going to get a Banshee but was recommended the Spectre at the last minute. It was slightly cheaper than a Banshee (although it's RRP is more) but it's a fair degree longer - the main addition is the two zipped storage areas at the ends, which I found really useful. I'm very happy with it, it was easy to put up, seems well thought through and built and it survived 30mph winds and heavy rain with no trouble.

The pay off of course is that it's a bit heavier (.7kg more) but I bought this for two people to use - wouldn't want something as small as the Banshee for two personally.

  • can anyone recommend a tent you can fit yourself and your bike in (wheels off) ?

  • ^^ sexy time ?

  • I fitted my bike in the spectre I just posted. Had to take the front wheel off but plenty of space for me and the bike.

  • but iz heavy

  • Maybe this?

Mines just arrived and I'm yet to put it up, but the pictures make it look mahoosive. Light as bru.

  • One day I'm gonna get around to making my own lightweight shelter. But I've been saying that for the past year. :]

  • ^^That does look good. How much is it?

  • according to her link - a shy under 300 of your dollars.

I actually liked that, does it have some kind of usable porch?

  • Yep and £23 import tax which is not bad at all. It's seriously light and hopefully roomy! Will let you know when I've put it up.
