Lightweight tent recommendations?

  • I pack the poles and herring separately attached to the bike, have the tent itself sitting in a lightweight vacuum compressing dry bag

    That's what I want to see :)

How solo riders pack up is what I'm interested in. I do see a fair amount of couples and small groups bikepacking, but aside from TCR style events I don't see much in the way of how individuals who ride solo are packing their stuff.

The tent, roll mat, and sleeping bag are a huge amount of space for a solo rider, so it's interesting to see how people are solving the space and carrying issues as much as the weight issues.

And maybe that's just me... I am not reading every thread constantly, maybe that stuff is on here already :)

  • Ah alright, here's my current setup, Alpkit dry bag on the back is usually in the basket but it doubles as a mudguard right now. The red dry bag is full of civvies and a down jacket (I carry a little bit too much imo), the top tube bag is my wallet and phone, some small tools.

One pannier is laptop + tent compressed in dry bag, sleeping bag liner, inflatable mattress and a thin decathlon blanket. The other pannier is charger for laptop and phone, a 3 way hex, Brooks saddle creme, ptfe grease, Loctite 242, some small tools, a thin book, some other small items.

Frame bag is inner tyres and a shopping bag. If I had to bring a sleeping bag I'd put it on the back inside a (Vaude Cordura) dry bag and keep the clothing bag in the basket. Hope this is more helpful...

  • Also apologies not really a full bikepacking setup, which I think is what you're more interested in I guess. I think experimenting with it yourself is probably the best way to find out your ideal setup, everybody has different preferences, see what works for you

  • Hi I just put on the rear rack is better to use inside a plastic bag or waterproof bag so it doesn't get wet and accommodate between the 2 panniers on the back with everything in one bag including a footprint.
If you have one of those ortlieb or other dry bags just loop it around the seat post that olds better and avoids the tent slip away from the bike.

  • Here's a photo!

  • I'm a big fan of front loading on Pizza rack style solution.
Everything in dry bags strapped on.

This was for a bivi/tarp setup.

  • Can't see pic.

  • Has anyone ever made their own ground sheet? What are cheap alternatives?

Considering the options for my Hubba Hubba, the £50 for the MSR ground sheet seem really a lot, despite how good it may be.

  • I’ve been meaning to make one for mine, this seemed like a good thread with recommendations.

Looks like weight vs durability is the main decision to make.

  • Cheers mate! I stumbled upon that page before, I'll have another read though!

  • Tyvek makes a good one in my experience.

  • Thanks! Any idea where I could source a sheet big enough?

  • Rona or the Despot (Home Depot)?
    Sorry, I'm in Canada.

  • Roofing suppliers can but to size, generally it is 1 meter wide though, so might not be useful if you need anything wider. Bob from backpackinglight.co.uk imports from USA, I believe, as he found the Tyvek availalbe in the UK was not up to the same standard as that over there, I can't vouch for any of that though. He has a pretty good podcast on ultra light hiking called the outdoor station.

    He sells Tyvek here;

  • Now the boss has a bike of her own here, might try a short/overnight trip.

Charity shop had a 'Mountain Life' (Mountain Warehouse) Backpacker 2. Was only £9 so worth a punt. Will test in the garden when it dries up a bit.

  • I wanted a cheap, compact one man tent that packed down small. Went for the Berghaus peak 3.1, which I think ended up being about £75 from Blacks after a discount code. For an inexpensive option, I would recommend. Super easy to put up (it’s a single pole, flysheet first affair) and reasonable build quality considering it’s a budget option. Packs down tiny - fit my front pannier easy.

  • Can also vouch for the berghaus. I have it packed into a small dry bag and it fits on front rack under bar bag

  • Don’t suppose you’re bristol area? Swear I’ve seen that bike with similar set up round these parts!

  • No, in London. And haven't been to Bristol for years...

  • I have the Jamet Oural, 1.9kg for 2 personnes. If fits in my handlebar

  • That catalogue looks like an indie coming of age film about camping.

  • anyone interested in purchasing a hoolie 3? bought last summer and used only once. think i need something smaller...

  • How much are you looking for for it?

  • Just made a sale thread for a Hoolie 3 if anyone is interested. Not the lightest but pretty solid.
