a langster alu is a better commuting machine than the langster steel, you'll like the look of it but find it'll be limiting, like lack of rack mount.
drop handlebar are something you'll end up liking in the future, especially riding on the brake hood, and road brake are plenty powerful enough as it is (once set-up correctly).

Has anyone seen the 2011 alu Langster yet? Or how about the 2011 Langster steel?

So from reading this thread, and the patience of the experienced riders is appreciated by us newbies - is a langster steel worth a punt as an entry level SS?
Ive 500 quid insurance from my bike that got nicked - was a cannondale bad boy but the gears arent needed for my commute.
The things that put me off are the drop handle bars and...i like disc brakes.
Im taking langster for a test drive on friday.

I have.
The Langster 2011 is the lightest OTP I've ever known. Fact.
The Langster Steel 2011 is heavier than the 2010 model, despite having lighter wheels. Its the chrome that increases the overall weight.

If you want a ss and want discs then an on-one pompetamine is prob a better bet. The prices are over your £500. But then they all seem to have hub gears, so I'm sure if you call you can get a quote for a ss version. (btw you really can call them and talk to a person who's not a complete fuckwit).
Test riding different bikes is mos def the best idea - different strokes for different fokes, etc.
Personally I don't get what ppl have against the steel langster. The kit seems decent and it looks nice. Fair enough putting a quill on a modern bike is possibly a bit daft, but if you prefer the way it looks...

^ This is the truth. The £300 Plug is a bit like the £15 on-one hubs - it just renders everything up to the higher end defunct.
But then as you do have £500 to play with (don't know if you have to spend it all?) you may as well make that jump to a decent alu frame with carbon forks.

My mate recently bought a langster steel and I had a quick ride the other day - felt pretty dead to ride... and I was really surprised how heavy the whole set up is (especially the wheels)...

^good to hear some input from someone who's actually ridden one ;)

i test rode a langster (steel) and a plug earlier this year. I ended up with a globe roll, but I langster was a massive improvement over the plug. the plug feels like you're pulling a trailer and handles pretty damn slowly. I can't understand why the langster gets so much hate on the forum and the plug is pretty positive overall. I assume it's the lack of street cred from buying something from the big 'S' :)
-

There's no hate on the Langster on the forum at all.
Unless you're referring to those 'cities' one.
How come you end up with a Globe Roll?
-
• #736
^ I don't know about that Ed.
The Steel one gets rinced by plenty and so did the alu one until recently.
-
• #737
Sorry, you're right, the steel one does have some hatin', but the alu one is a pretty good bike.
-
• #738
The red one is pretty popular. (with drops)
That said from a distance it almost passes off as 'another fixie'.
So fine.

TBH i found it a bit nippier in handling than the langster and liked the integrated chain tensioners. Liked the bars better too initially, but they ended up being shit and I changed them anyway.
Would probably buy something different now (1st fixed) but it's done me pretty well so far. -

I'm looking to try some bull horns on the Langster, can anyone suggest a good model please
Thanks
-
• #742
many thanks, these seem better suited as seem lonnger in the reach, and if i'm not mistaken I could add
Would need to change the stem though as the original is a 25.4mm,
what do you think ?
Edit saw that I can get Profile Design Airwing Base Bar with a Ø Bar Clamp: 26,0mm, still not a 1 inch (25.4mm) so unless I'm mistaken still need to change the stem
-
• #743
^ you can use a inverse shim. Make one or buy one - the search will help.
Also airwings tend to be the most popular bullhorns/aero bars for general use. So that must say something. If you're using the alu langster are you 100% that the clamp is 25.4? If not, you can get an oversized stem, which'll give you more bar options in the future.
One thing to remember is when you're stretched out on bullhorns you'll prob be futher away than you were in the drops, so you may need a shorter stem. My 2p is by a cheap or cheap 2nd hand stem to check your reach, so you're not going back and forth.

Hugo7, thanks
I'm running the latest steel Langster, white frame when red stickers :Track stem quill 1", Round 1" steel, track drop, 25.4mm
The clamp should be able to accept a 26mm as its a one bolt job, and it should open enough to accept 26mm
If it's a little longer than this is no problem as I've got a 54 size and I think that I should have got a 56
am looking at these brakes as they are cheaper : Profile Design Quick Stop 2 Brake Levers

I've added a photo of my Langster to my blog if of any interest to any one :

You can always put some brake hood on it instead of getting a new bar, still have the 'bullhorn' position but have drop to go down on.

• #749
Thanks, But have ordered a Profile Design Airwing Base Bar + Profile Design Quick Stop 2 Brake Levers, should get them next week, No idea if better suited or worse, will just have to try them out :)

Thought I would chip in: I am very happy with my Langster Steel and finding it very comfy now I have fitted nitto RB-021 bars. At £350 new it was also a bloody steal
