  • The whole site looks more suitable for use as a sort of wildlife reserve with a 1 mile technical cycle circuit, also incorporating off-road trails, a BMX track, and possibly even a campsite.

That would be the ideal :/

  • Had to Google for that one:

    http://www.lda.gov.uk/server.php?show=nav.00100h003001002

The land bank for Stratford City was assembled by private developers and the LDA negotiated buy-out packages with most (I don't think all, but I'm not sure) of the businesses located within the zone. I don't think CPOs were used for any of that; from memory, the businesses hired good lawyers who defended their interests. I followed the transport picture more closely.

  • As far as i have followed all of this in the construction industry literature the whole low-cost housing thing applies by and large to the olympic village structures and other non-stadium type buildings. The main structures have already been identified as legacy buildings to aid regeneration of the whole area. This information contributes to whether or not you actually win the olympics in the first place so they would be screwing up pretty badly if they had to demolish all the structures designated for legacy use. See the following issued only a few days ago:

After the 2012 Games, the legacy Velodrome will be used by elite athletes and the local community and will include a café, bike hire and cycle workshop facilities. A road cycle circuit and mountain bike course will be added to the Velodrome and BMX circuit to create a legacy VeloPark that will combine cycling facilities across all disciplines in one cycling ‘hub’.

  • FYI there isn't currently any indication that the Velopark itself is under threat. There are some questions about it, but the principle itself is firmly established.

  • is that from 'the castle'?

  • Good get Rocksteady!

  • Coming along nicely as of this month:

  • Update on the 2012 Velopark, courtesy of "New Civil Engineer" so the article gives some nice detail on how the building is going to work.

  • 48 degrees!

  • Are there any East London cycling clubs we should be joining now to jump the queue for the velodrome? Someone's got to have 'dibs' on it surely? :p

  • Rollapaluza are the people I reckon

Lee Valley CC and East London Velo both spring to mind, but I bet that CC Hackney will also be quite interested in it.

But will there be a lot of track time for grassroots, or will it mostly be elite sport?

  • Lee valley leisure are taking it over after the games. so although their club will be based there, nobody should have exclusive rights.

  • I think its time to join a new club. Bye all, it was nice knowing you

  • “Professional cyclists said it can be very distracting if they’re cycling and there is a lot of noise on the straights but when they get to the bends it stops, and starts again when they exit,” he says.
“To ensure continuous noise we have built two or three rows of seats all the way around the lower tier, but the upper tier stops [at the bends]. This idea has influenced the shape of the whole building, especially the shape of the roof − it had to be pushed up at each side to make room for the seating.”

I don't get it, how does having less seats at the curves mean more noise when the riders are at this bit?

  • acoustics, dear boy.

  • It does look and sound very impressive. I really hope that people like us will be able to use it on a regular basis

  • acoustics, dear boy.

So having less people near the rider makes it more noisy at that point? Counter-intuitive, dear boy.

  • Please correct me if i'm wrong but it looks as if the person writing the article has got very confused about what they mean!

I think it's because in a lot of velodromes there is no seating or maybe one tier around the apex of the banking. Here there will be at least a couple of tiers around the full banking length. And the roof will be a bit lower internally over these seats (which you can see in the renders) which will help a smaller number of people create a lot of noise.

I think the important bit is not that there will be fewer seats in the curves but that there WILL be seats there.

  • well that and the perception of sound from the riders POV, where the noise collects for them is not necessarily the exact point of where the most people are.

  • Hmmmmm, second claim time. I live in Clapton/Hackney what club should I choose....

This is pretty annoying as I live so close to the olympic site, yet have plans to move to just about as far as is possible from there by 2012.

  • The velopark is in E15.

I have no plans to move particularly close to this.

  • I just heard on the radio, that the velodrome is due to be completed in a years time. A year and a half early. I guess that means it might be possible to get a ride before the Olympics then?

  • Yeah right!
