  • I'd love to have a go on that bike haha. Such silly gearing.

  • it would be great if he did break the record.
I need more old folk to keep doing well to stop me thinking that its all downhill from 35 (and not good downhill)

  • Yeah, but you're not allowed to ride the "Athlete's Hour" with carbon bling, you HAVE to ride a "normal" Merckx's record-style bike. The performance hour allows aero bits and bobs but people don't seem to bother with that since it's not the 'true' hour record - not even sure you CAN ride it? Boardman might keep it forever :)

sosenka rode a carbon-tubed bike. rules only say you have to have round-tubes. obviously he wasn't acting in the 'spirit' of the rules but that's not really fashionable these days - just ask an MP.

sosenka also tested positive for crystal meth, so it's fair to say that he didn't make all the best choices in life...

Surprised they let him get away with the carbon bike as with Huchinsons attempt the UCI had ago about him having power tap cranks and a digital bike computer.

  • Yeah I was referring more to the aerodynamic aids you can get with modern TT frames. Sosenka's website appears to be shut down so I can't find any decent pics of his bike. He did quite a few things to help his attempt (heavy rear wheel, tiny frame) but as was stated they were all in the rules so not much to argue with.

UCI don't like pacing devices on bikes (computers, etc) which is why they didn't approve power meters and computers. Pacing has to rely on your coach from the sidelines moving about or signalling if you are up/down on your planned schedule.

  • No ones beaten Boardmans aero style record but I'm not sure if anyones tried, it doesn't really seem to be fasionable. It might come back though as its good publicity for bike companies. Theres another hour record which lets pretty much anything, so its mainly recumbrants, this is always getting broken by people from the states and Germany.

Lance was meant to go for both of them after his retired but it never came about

  • Google "Battle Mountain" for HPVs...

didn't someone once try the hour with a paced spotlight circling the track and they had to follow / keep up with /pass it?

  • What a guy, what a legend, what a story.

Best of luck to him, as ever. Love the way he rides in his local club kit.

It is great that he has taken inspiration from this forum for his 'new build'.

  • Look at the way he's hooked his wrists around the bar ends so his elbows are forced inwards, he even has extra bar tape/padding down there. Looks so uncomfortable, If he breaks the record I wonder if they'll come up with some rule about your elbows being inside the width of the bars??

  • There's no such thing as 653 tubing!

  • huh?

  • winston is in denial

  • huh?
    it's true.....

  • The 653 tubeset uses 531 tubing for the main tubes and fork and 753 tubing for the stays, it is not a tubing or alloy in it's own right......so there!

Yeah I vaguely remember reading that. While back though I think.

edit: can't find it on the 'net so it's probably in one of my books.

If he's taken inspiration from this forum, then he's a bloody fool.

He might have read a cautionary tale about Jacques Anquetil ...

For (almost) all your Reynolds tubing arguments..

  • It has only just occurred to me that he is riding 136GI quite fast, brakeless on the road (and by the seaside by the look of it).

  • He still lives in Scotland yeah? It's in the middle of the day and there's probably 2 cars going past per week (possibly closed roads somewhere too) or he just doesn't care. :)

  • thats fair enough about the tubing

  • "Do a skid, Graeme!"

I love this photo of Boardman's hour record.

If Obree does go for the hour record (in Manchester most likely), i think a forum trip needs to happen.

  • fuck yeah! with massive banner that said "GO PENGY GO GO!" (in the style of Johnny B. Goode), that'd create complete confusion!
