he built it himself so maybe not savvy with welding/brazing martensitic steel.
plus he didn't need the lightest available as there is a UCI weight limit for the bike.

also I guess he would rather have it stronger and stiffer (oerrr) rather than lighter

953 is not for lugs I think, only tig welded I read somewhere I think?
