I totally missed the rules thread...

• #128
I edited a for sale post shortly after it was moderated, to reduce the number of images to 10.
It's triggered moderation again. What's the approved maximum number of pictures per for sale thread original post?
-
• #129
Play it safe, just do as few as necessary and multiple posts within the thread.
-
• #130
I took a chance and tried editing the OP (including deleting a photo) when something sold. Unfortunately, I've tripped moderation again.

Sorry Velocio - I completely missed this thread hence my post which broke the rules in about 30m places. Won't happen again.

Are there any rceommendations of leaving the price in the thread when you've sold something as a reference for future sellers and buyers? I state both asking price and final price in my threads, but most people just edit the price out with SOLD.. Which leaves everyone clueless to what the item was sold for..

• #133
I find it helpful too, but it's not something people feel strongly enough about. Hell, a lot of people aren't very good at stating that items have been sold, let alone the price at which it sold.

Is it acceptable for someone to leave a post on a for sale thread saying 'i'll buy that for x inc postage'?....then when i asked them to pm a confirmation....what i actually got was a message saying 'Gran Gotcha'?....Just wondering if that is allowable on this forum or not....just seeking clarification.....not naming any names...yet!

He's already been banned for 7 days, and clearly hasn't done anything since that time... soooooo... your point?

Let me get this straight...'He'....are we talking about the same person?....I take it...if we are talking about the same person....[clue town on the south coast]...this 7 day ban was sometime in the past?....Well if it is the same person....then he has done something now....that something i described in principal in my previous post....i can go into specifics if needed.....the point is what he did on my thread...ie pretending to buy....Grans Gotcha...this is not someone saying dibs...and then undibs because on reflection it is a bad/wrong deal for them or they cannot afford the item....this was malicious and i would like to know if what 'he' did is acceptable under the rules for classifieds on this forum....and what he did was at midnight last night....hence my need for clarification.

PFG is currently banned.

PFG is currently banned.
Was that as a result of what he 'did' on my thread or was for other fellonious acts!...When was he banned?.....Had i been told he been banned as a result of what he did to my thread....i would not have submitted any posts to this thread....because if he was banned as a result of what he did on my thread....i would know the forum clearly does not tolerate such behaviour......So was he banned as result of what he did on my thread?....What would his punishment be if he does it again when he ban ends?

He... was... banned... as... a... result... of... your... report... in... conjunction... with... the... rest... of... his... behaviour... since... registering.

Thank you...you have answered my question as to the acceptability of such behaviour on this forum and I applaud your action. It would have better had i got a reply to my report about PFG...had i been told [and the report had my email address on it]....i would not have needed to ask etc etc....perhaps it is worth doing in the future....Again thanks.

+1
I came on this thread to mention this because I find that being able to search back and see prices is much more helpful and helps both parties from being ripped off. Giving a guide price for someone selling and an idea for people who want to buy something but aren't sure about the price. Personally I think this should be emphasized as sometimes it's frustrating just seeing £SOLD.

Classifieds rules have been updated after a long period of me stewing on it.
The two changes:
1) When you advise people that you've sold something, say how much it sold for.
It's not obligatory, but it does help people buying and selling things in the future to assess what is a good price and helps reduce fishing expeditions.
2) If you are taking money via PayPal, the seller cannot demand that payment be as a "Gift" and this method of payment should not be used.
Sending money as a gift via PayPal removes all payment protection for the buyer and encourages fraud. It should never be used.
Yes PayPal charge a percentage of the transaction value to the seller and sending it as a "Gift" avoids that fee... but it's far more honest just to increase the price to include this or to say "If paying via PayPal then add 4%"*. If you do add a surcharge for PayPal, then you must declare this at the time of sale and not after the event... if you haven't declared it, then it's assumed that you have included any fees in the price and you don't get to demand it be added.
Those are the two changes, the PayPal one is mandatory (no seller is permitted to remove buyer protection), and the price declaration one is merely a recommendation.
- PayPal fees are 3.4% + 20p, but it's easier just to add 4% to all values if a surcharge is deemed necessary.

The rules applies to all new classifieds that appear from this time onwards.

good to leave prices in the ads after sale, this should establish some idea of reasonable prices for bikes & parts
About the paypal gift option: personally I've never felt encouraged to fraud... honesty is not a question of choice for me and I wouldn't want to be named and shamed here, but OK on rule 2 as well, will change my ads now.

as a frequent user and peruser of classifieds, the updates make total sense,
particularly regarding historic prices because for those who are coming new to the site and have (like me) learned a great deal about my own bike and the bikes I've become interested due to the classifieds and the discussions they provoke, being able to access price info has given me confidence to buy parts and invest in and (learn how to) work on my bike, without feeling like a total nube who is about to get ripped off at every stage.

Price or no price?....Adjudication time....is this within the rules or not.....who is right? Do the rules need modification or alteration?

It was always optional.

It's against the rules to perform fishing expeditions where you may sell the bike, but ultimately are just trying to gauge interest and potential price in advance... you're either selling the bike or not, and fishing expeditions fall under the "Not selling" category and aren't allowed.
However, if you are selling you do not have to state the price in advance. So long as your intent is to sell, then you can have an advert that is open to offers. However, to pull that advert later because "No offer was high enough" would shift you into the fishing category and may result in your ability to place adverts in the future being removed.
So: "Offers accepted" with no named price is fine, so long as you really are going to sell the bike when a serious offer comes in.
If we dictated that every advert must have a price, then we'd end up with a lot of adverts being Dutch auctions. Whereby someone who is unsure of the value of their bike is encouraged to start high and constantly devalue the bike until someone buys it.
I don't have anything against Dutch auctions, feel free to try them... but it would make Classifieds an even noisier place (many bumped threads hiding newer adverts), and would make the sales process have less dignity than it currently has. It would start to feel more like a flea market than "friends buying stuff from friends". So I don't necessarily want to encourage them heavily.
Finally, there are many cases where people don't know the re-sale value of something.
For example: I built a custom Bob Jackson from new bling parts, and held onto it for 3 or 4 years. I knew that what I'd paid was not what it was going to be worth. At the same time I didn't know how much someone would be prepared to pay for it and didn't want to lose more than was reasonable (1/3 depreciation is expected, 2/3 is extreme). So in my case I asked for offers precisely because I felt that the market would regulate itself according to what people were prepared to pay, and that I hadn't bought and sold enough (because I'd held onto it for so long) to know what the market price was.
There is a place for "Offers accepted", so long as it's not a fishing expedition.
Newbie here, so there may be good reason why post count is not shown, but if it were, that could be an easy way to spot a seller bumping their own threads. If a for sale ad is full of posts from low posters, that would make me think twice. As a newbie you won't necessarilly recognise the members that have been around a while, just by name, but you would by post count & join date.
Just a thought....
EDIT - I know it's on the profile page, but most forums show the info on each post.
