  • NEVER! i fucking love that bike. except for the cunting chainset. Dom - got a spec for that profile crankset? muchos appreciatos.

  • Profile no-boss..

  • you are probably entirely right.

to be honest i'd happily run a good old fashioned square taper setup and sack off bmx kit for good.

  • The issue with the majority of BMX cranksets it the limitations of the single bolt chainring mount, it will never hold a chainring as securely as a 5 bolt spider, not a problem with the low (ish) speeds involved with bmx, but more of a problem riding fixed - profile no boss (or a 5 bolt spider) eliminates this problem

  • fair enough. No Boss cranks don't look that different to any other 19mm 48 teeth sprocket option out there, tho i'm sure the quality is somewhat better than most. i like the idea of a spider - are there issues with bikes with tight chainstay clearance?

thanks for all the protips btw.

/can only find US retailers. which is pissing annoying.

  • The issue is that riding fixed puts a force on the chainring in one direction and then in the opposite direction when resisting the pedals. Because there is always a small amount of play, where the bolt goes through the chainring/spider, it will allow it to rotate back and forth just enough to make everything come loose. If you countersink the chainring/spider and use a countersunk bolt + a bit of thread lock, you should be okay. Hope that makes sense.

(Don't know about Gusset but as mentioned before, Profile use imperial hardware)

  • There is no-play in a no-boss crank.
If you are using that old bolt-on chainring shit then duh.

I can only speak from experience here, but these spline drive (no boss) cranks have held up exceptionally well over the past two years with absolutely no issues ever. My girlfriend also runs the exact same cranks on her commuter daily and has never experienced anything coming loose.

The main problem is finding a spline drive front sprocket large enough for a reasonable gear ratio.

note: you need a spline drive chainring for this

  • 3 ringing endorsements for PNB's is good enough for me. presumably they dont require any sort of proprietary BB. would these cranks work with a 5 bolt spider/chainring setup? i figure that way you can get more versatility as far as the chainring goes.

    thoughts on this shopping bag?

/need to find local stockists mind you - £40 shipping can >>>>>>>>>>>>

  • You'll need a Euro bmx bb.

CRC have the Volume Krull spider for mucho cheapness just now.

The Krull is 130bcd as opposed to the 110 of the profile spider but Goldtec make bombproof and not overpriced track chainrings in 130bcd.

  • I have no first hand experience running spiders with 5 bolt/track chainrings.

However, contrary to the above post, the ESB actually has a press fit mid BB (unless yours is special, greenhell). Your current BB setup should work just fine (assuming it's for 19mm spindles).

  • yup - press fit as far as i know. would that affect the choice of spoder? chainline considerations...

ps everyone hit me up for a beer next time you see me. except em.

    ok em as well.

  • Ah my mistake, should have checked what frame it was.

BB should be compatible if it's 19mm spindle then I think. Though, don't Profile use a wierd imperial axle diameter that's either slightly larger or slightly smaller than 19?

  • 3/4" axle on profiles - 19.05mm so a 19mm bb will fit absolutely fine! I think modern profiles use metric fixings although it's been a long time since i've seen a pair

i'm liking the sound/price of these. Again - do any of you reckon will i have clearance issues with the rather unforgiving chainstays on the ESB, especially considering the chainring still has to bolt onto that fucker?

  • I ran a Krull and WTP 3 piece cranks on a Charge Scissor with no clearance or chainline issues.

  • chainring?

  • Goldtec.

  • FYI i'm selling a volume Krull

  • 48 spline is an inherently shit design, you either live with wobble, buy new cranks all the time or live with worse bearings and run 22mm cranks

  • mini-bmup...

    Mid or Euro BB?

i'm a bit mystified as to the pro's and cons of each tbh.

  • ESB is Mid.

  • euro is the same as road bikes etc i.e. threaded
