  • hi guys,

im currently "fixing" a Raleigh Milk Race bike. i wanna have it solely fixed but my girlfirend wants me to put a single speed freewheel cog on there for her.

am i right in thinking i can thread one of these BMX single speed freewheel cogs onto my bike?

    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/?_nkw=single+speed+freewheel+cog&_sacat=0&_trksid=m270&_odkw=singlespeed+free+wheel+cog&_osacat=0

    thanks : )

  • if you have a flip flop hub (fixed/free) you could have a fixed sprocket on one side and a bmx freewheel on the other.
don't those milkrace raleighs have some funny looking dropouts that make it hard to get chain tension? you might have to file the dropouts a bit to make room for moving the wheel back.

  • yup, you can run a freewheel on a fixed thread (just ignore the lockring threads) too

i've never had any probs with it

  • Raleigh milk race bikes are cool as fuck as they are. Shame to fix it really, not that rare but still... damn.

    Flip flop hub ftw.

  • why use a threadless b/b? just put some thing like a miche track b/b that way you can finr tune your chainline

  • Hi all,

I have an old 1976 Raleigh with a 3-speed sturmey archer fitted that i stripped, sprayed and added some drop bars to. I really want to convert to SS (it is useful having the gears with the look of a SS bike, but tbh the wheel bearings are goosed and i need new wheels at some point anyway) but i don't know if it will be worth all the cash? The main problem atm is that i want to replace the BB and get coterless cranks, but as it is on the old Raleigh 26tpi thread it would mean the best part of £150 before i've even started on a Phil Wood BB...

    Any ideas/suggestions ppl?

  • Not worth the cash, in my humble opinion.
I nearly made a similar mistake!

  • Yeah this is what i'm worried about! Oh well, i think i will keep commuting on it for now as it is a solid bike and i got it for free lol but will keep saving up for a custom build by BLB which is what i have my heart set on...

Yes, you read all this crap eh?

Could get another frame nice and cheap, that takes 700c wheels and english thread etc??? Convert.
    Keep Raleigh for the pub.

  • Cheers for the help Jogger! Yeah i have read most of Sheldon Browns website in a mission to learn as much as i could (i am new to road bikes and SS, but the London commute and some of the awesome bikes i see have got me hooked!). It all seems like too much hassle as it will require sourcing various parts and fiddling about until they work at the end of the day.

I think i may go with sourcing an english or italian threaded BB frame - any suggestions on what to look out for so i don't end up with another "black sheep" frame?

  • Cool i shall keep my eyes peeled. Thanks once again for your help!

Am i right in thinking that an 80's Raleigh frame be on an english BB thread? They did away with the old 26tpi in the early 80's IIRC from reading the net...

  • Hi all,

Finally putting my hands on a first conversion after several track frame builts and will surely need some help/tips on a couple of points.

Frame is a 90's Raleigh Randonneur - gunmetal grey. Pretty smooth but sturdy ride (just done 400 miles geared London to Land's End with it and it rolled like a beauty all the way, now time to get back fixed).

Main "problems" I am facing are:

    • Rear wheel spacing: 136mm. I already have a set of wheels which I'd like to use on it. Rear wheel is a f/f Condor hub, 120mm spacing. What are the solutions to fit these wheels on the bike? Longer axle + some spacers? Re-build the wheel with wider hub? Of course I'd like to keep the conversion as cheap as possible considering I already have all necessary parts to fit.

    • Bottom bracket/crankset: No idea of the type of b/b it can hold, there's some kind of protective cage at the end of the b/b currently fitted on, and it doesn't look like a square taper one. Is it possible to fit a "track" b/b that will hold my Andel cranks? Any size can be fitted to suit a proper chainline?

    • Chainline: I guess that's the most tricky point for any conversions, any tips on how to measure it/make it straight are more than welcome as this is pretty obscure to me...

Any one had any experience with a similar conversion? These are the main things I can think about at this stage, I can post pictures of specific parts of the frame it that can be of any help.

Generally any tips or comments are more than welcome. Really love the bike and would be happiest man if I can run it fixed.

    Cheers all

  • Here's a thread of Raleigh conversion info for you.
