  • damn stevo, I wanted that Bob J frame.

  • nitromors on carbon forks?

  • No. It will end in tears.

  • ha thought as much. sandpaper pretty much the only way of getting paint of carbon?

  • Anyone got any additional tips on using nitromors to get rid of powdercoat compared to paint?

There seem to be some conflicting opinions around as to whether nitromors works on powdercoat and i've got to part strip my Steamroller to get a couple of braze ons added to the frame.

Permatex Gasket Remover (car parts shop) spray and leave for 15 mins the scrape it of.

Wet n dry. I've seen what nitromors did to a carbon kayak, make a lovely flowerpot now.

  • Assuming Surly's original finish is a powdercoat, I can confirm that Nitromors did the trick really easily. In fact, that frame stripped more easily than the painted frame I was doing at the same time!

  • hey, so i got a tin of nitromors and tried it out on my cranks just to see how it would turn out, raw steel looks pretty good, but do i need to spray with clear lacquer, will it rust if i dont?
also, its a good idea to wear gloves and goggles, i didn't, and damn that stuff burns
    cheers

  • ^^^ the cranks are cromo if that makes any difference btw ( i'm not sure how to edit posts)

  • Use proper gloves that are chemical rated and if doing indoors (try to avoid) use a mask that is also solvent/chemical rated - Nitromors packs some punchy carcinogens

  • Agreed on the gloves, I could not have used this stuff without gloves, just makes handling things so much easier. I stripped my frames outside and it was actually a rather pleasant and satisfying job. Quite fun listening to the paint peel and crack and fall of the frame! Definitely wouldn't want to do it indoors.

  • Slight threadjack:

If you can't get nitromors or don't want to run the risk of serious chemical burns, I can recommend 'Rustins Strypit' paint stripper. works on every paint I've tried and even on powdercoat with repeat applications. Nice and thick too so less likely to drip. Also no burns - I haven't dunked a hand in it or anything, but I've gotted little splashes on me with no harm done.

Should be able to get some from a local hardware shop. Good luck!

And no, I don't work for Rustin's (Although reading this back it sort of looks that way...)

  • Quick question, has anyone nitromorsed rims? I really want a front CXP33 for the lo pro but they only come in 650c black, so was thinking of nitromorsing it off, will it work? im assuming it will, but just thought id check before forking out for the rim!

  • nitromors for paint or powdercoat

    caustic soda for anodising

done both, little messy but fine.

  • groovy, cheers Dale :)

  • Any recommendations on gloves? Will washing up gloves be ok?

  • Any recommendations on gloves? Will washing up gloves be ok?

You could use those but try and get something more durable. Any glove with a hardy fabric would be better.

  • I used thick gloves to wash dishes and was fine, as well I stripped the bike outdoor and I dont think anyone should try do it indoors .

  • I might go for a washing up glove + gardening glove combo then, I don't want to spoil my dainty fingers.

I used some blue marigolds and applied it with my index finger (forgot to get a brush)

a little bit must have seeoed through, but it burnt less than getting the actual Nitromors on your skin

  • Paint nitromoors on thick, leave for about 10 min then rub off with wire wool soaked in celulose thinners, srub in all the lugs etc. You will need about 1l of nitromoors and about 2l of thinners and a fistfull off wire wool.

  • Gonna give this a go at the weekend

Not gonna repaint the frame(alu) though, just gonna leave it raw. What's the best way to give the frame a nice clean looking finish, just simply use Autosol/Brasso or something?

    Thanks

If you are leaving the frame raw, make sure you use a soft cloth and soapy water, not wire wool when removing the blistered paint, otherwise you'll scratch it to fuck.

And make sure you wear goggles, gloves and long sleeves, this stuff really does burn.

  • Thanks Andy

So how do I clean up the frame then afterwards...to stop it oxidising and looking manky
