For a small and cheap digital SLR camera with lots of features i can recommend the Olympus E420.

i am REALLY pleased with my d60, its my first Digital SLR, i would rate 9/10, thats because i know that there are better cameras out there, but for me rite now is a 10, because i cannt afford a d90.
Let me know how it goes! -

Have a look at http://www.graysofwestminster.co.uk/products/ , they do a great selection of 2nd hand stuff, I picked up a mint D70s + 2 lenses for £450 over a year ago, so worth having a look.

Speaking as a pro, Nikon and Canon are where its at for SLRS, don't bother with any of the smaller brands, and if you're looking long term, spend good money on lenses, as they will stay with you for a long time as you upgrade camera bodies over the years.

Personally I prefer Nikon, but that is my personal preference, I can't be assed to start the whole Nikon/Canon debate on here!

If you're a paid professional photographer this probably makes sense. The rest of us would like to have IS built-in (Sony, Olympus, Pentax) thanks very much. OP see if you can find an old Pentax K100D. -

1+ althought for a normal everyday camera for the average individual, even the cheapest DSLR is more than enough.

The E-420 is a tidy little camera, kinda remind me of my old tiny Pentax ME Super in term of size.

The D40 and D60 are great starter DSLRs. As CrazyJames said, the best thing you can do is spend money on good glass as it will outlive the body.
I started on a D50 and 18-70mm AFS after shooting on film for a long time (F3 and FM2). I then added a 50mm F/1.4.
I now have a D700 with various pro lenses and the 50mm is still in use.
Canon and other offer similar spec camera across the range and it all comes down to personal prefrence. I've shot on Canon and Pentax over the years but prefer Nikon.
I've been looking at the D60/D80 as a back-up body for my set-up.
The only people who might want to avoid the D40 or D60 are those that own AF-D lenses as the D40 and D60 won't auto focus or meter with those lenses.

I think IS is over rated personally, and it saps battery life something rotten, i've tried it out to see if it works, but never bothered to use it regularly, if your camera has a decent enough sensor you can usually just up the ISO with very little percievable loss in image quality to get the shutter speed you need, or use a tripod. Most of my work is done on a tripod though to be fair, but for anything that isn't I am normally using enough lighting to get a high shutter speed (1/250 of a second) which negates the need for any kind of IS.

Nikon all the way!!!
Ok so slightly off topic, but I've noticed there seems to be a fair amount of photographers on here - thought it might be worth a shot.
Anybody got an entry level Digital SLR there looking to sell? I'm looking at something similar to say a Nikon D40.
Will take body only if you want to keep the lens.
Thanks,
Now back to the bikes...
