An elegant classic. It would also look lovely with Coppi That's helmet.

Talking of Montane, they do a very, very thin pullover windshirt which packs down to the size of a small apple (water-repellent rather than waterproof). Highly recommended as you can stick it in a jersey pocket and forget about it until the weather goes bad, at which point it's just enough to stave off hypothermia.

yep you can pick them up quite cheap too - I got one for £15 a while back from Rock & Run - essential bit of kit. Have worn mine on Munro tops with a hoolie blowing full force in Winter with a base layer on underneath and not been troubled too badly

Paramo do a similar windproof oriented piece called the Fuera Smock

+1 to the montane
it is shower proof but also a good windbreaker
at the end of the day if you cycle hard a water proof layer will only catch the sweat and condense it any way
cycling and being waterproof are not really mutually inclusive, so a light shower proof top is as good as it gets, if it rains any heavier then HTFU seems to be the best choice.

The nearest to perfect waterproof/breathable balance (at the cost of a lot of bulk and dosh) is Cotton Ventile - magic stuff. If I were rich, I'd have one of these for winter like a shot: http://www.hillgear.com/acatalog/Cycling_Double_Ventile_Jacket.html

My water proof kit isn't dissimilar ... proper country boy I am.

thought youre idea of cycling attire was cotton shorts, and a distinctly unbreathable Metallica t-shirt, at least it was sunday on I.o.W, now I know what you wear for long wet rides then

Ha,
When I have a job that pays me lots of money I might get some decent kit, for now I will make do with metallica T-shirt and A pair of Denim shorts.

Buffalo Shirts for the winter- kinky but they work.
However, they are a bit hot for the summer.
Capes and Sou Westers are the next thing in retro cycling - expect Rapha versions any mnute .

The thing is Sou Westers (I have a red set), keep you bone dry and warm, however they don't look particularly cool and are far too hot when the temperature is over 10 celcius.

I have a black rubberised set. Wearing the coat on it's own is uber-gimpy.
(without a hat, not without other clothes.)I like it.

This is what Offshore Tigers rock in transit - complete with re-breather system and personal locator beacon - it's de rigeur in the North Sea....

Sou Westers are actually really good in the wet as they stop the water going down you neck
But they only look good in a Frank Patterson drawing .... -
