  • Could not agree more. Pink handle here for added cuteness.

  • Other than possibly tomatoes (!) I really can't imagine what I might use a Victorinox tomato knife for.

    What am I missing?

  • I'm not a fan (said without having one) but have the more stabby opinel one, I see the greater length and curve would be an advantage, but anything done is with the left hand compensation

  • Opinel brunch knife got me a few months ago

  • But so did these (from a link a few pages back, that I've lost)

  • In my experience slicing your finger. I think I’ve used one ten times and cut myself three times. Don’t think I’m particularly clumsy.

  • I’ve got about 4 in the drawer.
Occasionally for some fruit and veg, but mainly as a sandwich / butter knife.

Spreading butter, Cutting messy, sticky things like Nutella, peanut butter, cheesy toasties.
And then throw it in the dishwasher, rather than having to hand wash.

Also not at all precious with them, so I’ll happily use it on a ceramic plate, to avoid spreading mess.

I’ve got a pointy Victorinox tomato knife version as well, which often gets used for opening food packaging, and chucking in the sink.

  • Super versatile, like a serrated paring knife.

Bagels, any fruit or veg, boxes & packaging. It just chews through anything. Including, like @root mentioned, everyone in my family's finger at some point.

  • Now you mention it, I open nearly all my bread buns, pitas and cut sandwiches in half (assuming I didn’t need to slice the bread) with mine. So my finger cutting ratio must be slightly less gruesome. When cutting tomatoes though it just eats flesh.

I don’t put it in the dishwasher though cause I’m not an animal.

  • With a small child I'm chopping lots of fruit, veg, meat into bite size portions. Tomato knife means I can chop straight on the plate with no concern about what it's doing to the blade.

Also a mini bread knife for bagels, rolls, malt loaf, etc

  • bite size portions. Tomato knife means I can chop straight on the plate

This makes much sense. I needed a set 8 years ago!

  • Opinel Tomato knife gets daily use here preparing school packed lunch fruit/veg options.

Victorinox option sounds good, might grab one as spare.

  • One of my favourite knives is a small orange handed pairing knife of my parents from Super U. It's razor sharp with a fairly flexible blade. It's also my absolute favourite for oyster shukking and far superior to all the other over designed ones they have amassed over the years.

  • Thanks all for the board recs - that Borough Kitchen one looks like it could be ideal.

  • With a small child I'm chopping lots of fruit, veg, meat

How do you keep a small child sharp for chopping?

  • They whet themselves

  • Knife crimes right there, is this a banable offence?

  • We have a couple of those Vitoria small knives, the non serrated ones, as beater knives for smaller stuff. Taken loads of abuse, still sharp and I don't stress about them. Would recommend.

  • I mean you can get a 3 pack for £11:

  • Someone needs to not paste everything after the ?.

An opinel office knife is around £8, and can't go in the dishwasher due to the wooden handle. The victornox ones are less the £4 a knife. Cheaper than the kiwi knives.

  • To add to my CCK, sugimoto and sentan I've got a custom coming from China. $80 shipped made to my spec. I'll see how it is when it gets here.

  • I picked up a work at work for when I do fried rice. I now brown all my meat with it. Nice flat bottom and doesn't roll around on my stove top.
