Went to little Switzerland in New Bond street, strangely one of the few shops in the street without burly security types on the door :)

Nail File.... the awl will punch a hole in seconds :)
-
• #2211
true, but the best nail file as an awl is the nail file as an awl you have with you

My old Spartan that was rescued from a crackhouse 20 years ago is showing it's age.
Got a camper (Spartan+saw) and went for some Tourists (not mugging tourists) as they are a slightly smaller version of a Spartan. Nephews will be getting tooled up with SAK's. Hence the volume of cutlery, got a pile of mini screwdrivers and little Lanyards for nephews and for to attempt bodging a ferro rod into fitting the corkscrew.Red flat pack gift boxes, a white choccy and some samples of micro atomiser perfume as well. :)

Went to investigate building my own up, but not as good as expected.
I can build my own Spartan and have name on the scales, but not pick and mix which tools get fitted :( and it was by appointment.
The internetz hinted you could make your own and change things.Mine has a snapped small blade and crimped edge, the large blade has been reprofiled to work around another snapped tip, it also has damage to the edge, the silver cross went missing ages ago. The Awl is damaged from making holes in metal. Everything else still works, never lost the tweezers or pick and have used every function.
New one has a saw. Old one is now an expendable work bag affair. The shop did offer to refurbish my old one for about £10 but I had to pick up in person (sure that's what they said) and not living in London wasn't worth the hassle, so bought a stack of new ones :)
Should never need to buy a penknife again.

Need is different to want...
Do they do an Alox scale SAK with scissors? Probably my most used tool, along with the mini screwdriver that screws onto the corkscrew (glasses screw keeps coming loose)
-

Yep, didn't need a magnifying lense but wanted one.
After seeing the Tourist that will do me nicely and smaller than the old one.Looks like 5 or 6 Aloxs with scissors, kinda ruled them out as lack of corkscrew and small Awl, although it is rare to use a corkscrew nowdays as most wines are screw tops (1st world issues)

Classic, Minichamp or Pioneer X - unless you go custom. But you can't get an alox knife with a corkscrew to fit the mini-driver in.

It's a crying shame - my everywhere knife is a SAK Waiter, as it's slim and unobtrusive enough to go everywhere with me (and also UK legal), and the beer opener and corkscrew get used enough to make them worthwhile.* I'd love an Alox version, but would have to go custom and they're all a bit pricey.
*Usually backed up with a Leatherman Micra in my bag.

Pioneer X looks like just the ticket, but bit pricy!
Got a Spartan, Camper, Climber, Huntsman, Cybertool M, which I really rate as a work bag SAK

thanks for doing the leg work on whether you can make your own knife with pick and mix tools - gutted to find out you can't.
My spartan, which I bought in Los Angeles 25 years ago, was consigned to the "prohibited objects" bin in Sydney airport last month, when they wouldn't let me carry it as hand luggage. Also, SAK extorbitantly expensive in Australia, and hard to buy. In fact, knives in general seemed hard to buy, which suprised me.

but nothing beats the smugness when a corkscrew is needed, and you are the only person able to provide.

@stevep Oz appears to be the last place on earth that has a shop that still has a left handed Wenger in stock.
Also enquired if Victorinox would reinstate the Left hand series which was dropped when they bought out Wenger.... sales assistant thought i was mad when i explained the corkscrew was a reverse thread to the standard, lefties need wine too :) -

No longer in Oz, but I’m sure we could get the mythical LH Wenger bought and sent over.
I’m familiar with LH corkscrew, I bought one for my Dad. I suppose you could buy one, grind it down to the correct size, take apart an SAK, and fit the adjusted LH corkscrew in its place. There’s lots of stuff about modding SAK on the ‘net. But I agree, it would be nice to be able to buy a LH SAK off the shelf.

Never thought about left handed corkscrews.

His party trick was giving it to right handers and watching them try to use it. Sadly he got me more than once, and I bought him the damn thing.
A certain je ne sais quoi?
