  • How acceptable would a "Gun appreciation" thread be considered?

Have you not noticed the Gatling gun appreciation thread?

  • I like guns.
CJ, I'll see you at drinks on Wednesday?

  • Wheeeee!

I had to quote this, I found it hilarious.

  • Other people (including myself) will find it hilarious.
Should we all quote it, or (hopefully) believe that people might read a thread before contributing?

  • Yeah tim I should be doing Easts this week hopefully, so will see you there

My views are no different on the "gat appreciation" thread

I think our views are probably pretty similar on this. I started that thread as a lighthearted reaction to the near hysteria I saw on the original knife thread. This is the misc section so as such anything goes, if people don't like the non-bike content then they might want to stay clear. Threads like pastry lover's (and this one, once a few of us had 're-railed' it!) are transient, people are drawn to the argument and as such perpetuate something which would otherwise fizzle out fairly quickly.

The claim that these threads are an indication of the decline of this forum are, like so many before, specious. If all you want to discuss is bikes and cycling then perhaps the fixed 'scene' isn't for you. I find it (and this forum) appealing for the very fact that it is relatively inclusive and that the people here have a range of interests.

  • i have a diving knife from being a sailing instructor.
its lovely. but has gotten me in trouble, like when walking through town one day after work, just rocking a knife pouch above my ankle didn't sit too well.

  • I have a Marttini Explorer, which is a Finish mountain walking knife. It has a very short and strong blade. I always carry it when on trip into the mountains.

When I took my toddler mushroom picking a while back, I stowed it in the little first aid compartment of the boot of the car, so as not to leave it lying around. A couple of months later, in reaction to the high numbers of people being hit by cars while stopped by the side in the dark Norwegian winter, it became law to carry a reflective vest in the car. I was shortly after pulled over by the police who were checking that drivers had they're vests in the car. Mine was in the little first aid compartment. The policeman stood right behind me, when I grabbed something wondering what it was, and pulled a knife on him. Fecking pooed myself. The policeman did'nt even blink, he just asked in a friendly manner if I was on my way into the mountains. I'll never get used to this country :)

  • hehehe... That could have been your last gesture in this country.

  • always wanted to get myself a nice little custom hunter type knife.

  • I'm something of a knife geek myself, too. You'll rarely catch me leaving the house without a blade somewhere on my person - not carrying one doesn't feel right somehow. Much like the OP, I tend to EDC a Spyderco UKPK. This is my one:

When I'm out in the wilds, I go for a Frosts Mora in a rather lovely little leather sheath (probably cost more than the knife!):

This little bad boy rides in a pouch on my Chrome bag - no way it's likely to get me into any trouble because it's not really a knife. It's a Benchmade ERT-1 emergency rescue tool and incorporates a seatbelt/ligature cutter, an LED light and an automatic glass punch:

And as someone mentioned bowsan'arrahs, here's how I carry my compound bow when I'm going off to archery club:

It's funny how much more room you get from overtaking cars when you've got that on your back and a quiver full of carbon arrows sticking out of your pannier...

  • Other than that, I have way too many knives, although they are all of the kitchen variety, not the face-paint-and-camouflage-at-night-slice-up-the-neighbour's-cat-in-the-garden variety.

You don't need a special knife for that, silly.

  • Where do you shoot Charlotte?

  • Where do you shoot Charlotte?

Until recently with the Greenwood Osterley lot. But my membership lapsed :(

  • Talking of bows and arrows, anyone ever listened to the album of the same title by a band called "The Walkmen" I love that album.

  • Readers Knives, tut tut!!

  • haha!

  • Hey Charlotte, do you own any crossbows at all, my dad had some mental one when I was younger, it was made by barnett and had a 250lb pull, he fired a bolt through a car door in his mates junk yard once lol.

    Fucking Rednecks! ;)

Cool. Never knew they existed. I saw some shooting going on (big tournament) near Kew Gardens a while ago that spark a brief flicker of interest. I'll probably start shooting again when I'm too old to ride all weekend :)

I could always bring my kit back from Oz later this year.. just in case :)

  • I sense a trend here. Was a toxophilite (that's for Oliver)in my youth, shooting recurve to a good standard. Got sick of it and started to shoot barebow and generally fuck about. This coincided with an increased interest in boozing.

Bought a korean bow (short, heavily recurved) recently in order to rekindle the interest. Joined my local club (Clophill) and was greeted by some of the rudest, cliquey fuckers I've met. Shame really, should have just tried another club.

As I take pleasure in stirring shit, I'd just like to say that compounds, peeps, releases etc are for pussies. HTFU ;)

  • Were any of your toxa knurled?

  • I was a junior state champ and then 'upgraded' to a compound when I grew out of my recurve. Our club closed shortly after due to lack of members and I didn't shoot again until I moved to Melbourne, using my Dad's Hoyt (recurve again) by which time I was more interested in racing bikes (and drinking) so never really got that good again. I shot against Simon Fairweather in Adelaide (okay, different age groups, but still..). :)

I used to have knurled stabilisers.. oooh boy did I love screwing those in..
