depends.
A 5ft5 85kg is most probably a fattie.

5'7" and 86.5Kg at last weigh in.
Heavy boned.
The Stans ZTR 400 rims have a thicker spoke bed. So you can increase tension. Same width as the A23. Defo 28 - 24, maybe 32 - 24.

I received this from DCR wheels:
Any other fat mashers have A23s? Are they not worth it?
Jammy, that big 'un (6'3 or 6'4 either way he's quite high up) end up going for a touring wheels as he managed to twisted his A23s.

I went into Pearson Cycles and ordered A23s on Hope Pro 3s with DB DT spokes (32:32) on sat. Now I am thinking that I would rather some H Plus Son Archetype on the Hopes with CX-Ray (24:28 or 28:28). Now my question is - does it even fucking matter? Will it make any discernible difference or should I just stop over analysing it?

No.
Probably not.
Depends whether you enjoy it. -

What follows is a public thank you to Strada. It’s been a couple of weekends since my new 'training' wheels arrived from http://www.stradawheels.co.uk/ and I’ve clocked up some miles on them now .. not as many as I’d want but you can only temporarily ignore other duties! The build was Goldtec hubs, Cx-Ray and A23 rims .. Ed will be disappointed as I choose to use 23 tyres. So what can I say about my experience dealing with Strada that other people haven’t already waxed lyrically about in their blog?
Not a lot to be honest! These guys where extremely helpful right from the initial phone call and then built me a fine set of wheels. There’s nothing extraordinary about the components I end up with but in my opinion the mastery is in the way they have been put together. Straight out of the box these wheels roll beautifully. Thank you very much Strada. And the box they came in was very nice too .. some pics attached if anyone wants to see them.
If you want some wheels and are like me and don’t know how to put them together properly so that they'll last, or exactly the best build options for you, I’d recommend talking to these guys, listening to their recommendations and getting them to build them for you ..
And is Ed right about wide rims? Yes .. oh and the weight because we need to know! 1481 grams straight out of the box

Sounds like a bloody nice set of components to me. When you're not going out'n'out aero, or out'n'out weight weenie. You tend to arrive at a set of wheels that dont appear extraordinary.
Dont through those rim covers away. They look well useful (wall hook bike storage, car transport etc.). I wonder where they bulk buy them.

Also. Is that an M5 caliper?
Jello.

^ NICE! how much did they cost you? Also Enve 65 carbon clinchers for £700 . . not a bad price at all

How are the M5's with the 23mm wide rim Oswald?
Looks like a great wheelset.

299 with Ambrosio hubs - not bad. Those Enve deals are awesome

@ SF .. Yes the wheel covers where a lovely addition to the packaging. I’ve never had a set of wheels delivered so well packaged .. and I’ve had a few sets over the years. They are already in use elsewhere. The brakes are M5.
@ Dammit .. The M5 appear to work ok at this width - no need for the EE just yet. Usual lots of power! There’s still a little room to go wider but my personnel opinion is if I did I may start to compromise the braking efficiency because the arms would be opened completely out.
@ Amey .. I can’t remember the exact price because I had to wait a month for the hubs to be made. They weren’t available from Goldtec at time of my order in the drillings that Strada ended up specifying for my weight. But ball park I was around £600 area – the excess over the published prices for the Ambrosio build going on the hubs and spokes
I probably may have sounded like I was gushing a bit in my previous post but really I can not recommend these guys enough if you’re after a wheel build, nothing was too much trouble. When I first rang to enquire Jonathan spent a good 30mins plus just asking questions and discussing options instead of just trying to sell me what they wanted to sell .. I don’t know if it’s obvious in the pics but they removed the stickers for me and used a ‘stealth’ Strada label on the rims.

Nice wheels Oswald. Can I ask spoke count and weight?
I received some hand built A23s on hope hubs (32:32) and ridden an easy 50 miles over the w/e. Rear is now our of true by 1-2mm. My assumption is a poor build so gonna call the shop and ask for a free tune up. My qu is what tolerance is reasonable? Is having no visible wobble reasonable?

Why would I? on those rims, 23c felt more like 25c.

Bond to happen sooner or later, it's highly unlikely for a wheel to be perfectly true after a month since being build, so no surprised it would need a truing eventually, just not this soon.
They shoul do it for free.

@ Ed .. lol .. I agree the 23 feels fat! But I could squeeze more tyre on them :)
@ dst .. Yes .. the spoke count is 20 front and 24 rear and I'm about 65 to 69 kg depending on time of year and amount of effort put in .. the wheels weigh 1481g on my scales out of the box. I can't tell you what is acceptable, but my opinion (this is the internet!) is that a wheel going out of true after 50miles is not an accpetable build!

No way. Wheels don't "settle in", like cables stretching, unless they weren't stress relieved properly by the builder. It should be fine for ages unless it took a heavy knock from a pothole or something.

Wheels often have a bedding in period. More common with factory builds. But happens with hand builds too. I destress and retru my wheels several times before using them. But still put them back in the stand after a few hundred miles to fine tune, after bedding in.
They should retru for free though.
-

If the builder didnt stress relieve or unwind nipples to get rid of spoke torsion, then the wheels are bound to go out of true after a bit of riding.
A good builder will do all of the above things and the wheels stay true for a substantial amount of miles

• #671
Lets see how long Oswalds last ;)
-
• #672
I'm quite surprised by your spoke counts though Oswald, I would have thought those rims would want more spokes as they aren't the deepest of sections. Do they feel rigid enough?

In my experiance repeated destressing, even when the nipple shoulders are greased prior to building, is only so effective.
I dont associate the need for a retru with poor building personally.
50miles seems very short though.

Called shop and they are happy to true.

Fair enough - none of the wheels I've built have gone out of true bar one that got smacked into a kerb so hard it flatted the (32C) tyre. And then it took half a turn on one or two nipples IIRC.
But then I've only built road/track wheels - you're probably speaking from experience of off-road / XC / MTB / cargo bike wheels as well, right?
Fuck off.
85kg ≠ fat
Maybe Dyad?
