  • Yea if it's for me I go cheap.... but he hasn't had a birthday or chrimbo present for a few occasions so I think he wants to pimp out the bike.

@andyp not sure he's willing to wait so long. I think he wants them to train on leading up to the White Horse sportive, and to ride on them during that in April.

  • Best road set for less-than-ideal road surfaces, a heavier rider (not fat, lifetime (tri)athlete, but a bit mamil), budget around £400?

    2 pairs of DT R24 :-)

R32 is about £300 with tubeless tape and valves, so add some Schwalbe Pro One tyres and you're in about the same price range as the Mavic WTS

  • Mmmm.... good shout. Just checked downstairs, the current wheels (to be transferred to the turbo/'winter' bike) are Fulcrum Racing 5, so anything must be better than them.

He's a bit afraid of punctures/new-technology/anything starting with 'tub', and since I'm the one who'll be changing one on the roadside, probably not going to need the tubeless tape etc. But being tubeless read would be nice.

  • @Sanddancer Was selling some American Classic 58's for a real good price. If I had a need for them, I'd buy, but I don't :(
    Shoot him a PM

  • How about some Shimano RS81-35s ?

Right price, metal braking surface, and all my Shimano wheels have taken plenty of abuse with no problems, and 35mm deep is a nice middle ground between normal low profile rims and 50mm+ aero rims. Only downside is that they're not particularly wide at 21mm.

  • Mavic are never worth the money no matter how good they claim to be.

  • Why do you say that (just out of curiosity)?

  • so hunt seem to have adopted the flo cycling model, but what are the wheels like? Has anyone ridden them?

  • Why do you say that (just out of curiosity)?

Because they've barely changed in the last few decades, and a little odd especially when the Askium are slightly more aerodynamic than the Ksyrium for instance.

You'd be better off buy alternative wheels, Shimano, DT Swiss, even Superstars.

  • I've never been that tempted by mavic - I was mostly just wondering why their road wheels didn't get much love around here (ignoring the golden days of the open pro obvs)

  • Can anyone Id this freehub?

12mm axle, looks like 2 6901ru ezo bearings.

  • 10/11 speed Campag.

Or do you mean which wheels will it fit?

  • They seem hell bent on ignoring all current developments in wheel technology. They've ignored both aerodynamics and the benefits of wider rims, yet remain expensive.

  • Yeah, sorry I know it's a campag freehub. It's starting to crack so I want to replace it. Will grab a pic of the hub it's from.

  • Well that's inspiring and forward thinking of them.

I like their yellow cars when there are cycle race though, pretty like sunflowers.

  • What's the go-to tubeless road rim that could be used for CX too?

  • Well that's inspiring and forward thinking of them.

Didn't stop people buying them like they're hot potatoes tho.

  • Thanks all. I was misinformed, turns out it's 11 speed Ultegra, not 10 speed. Confused information etc.

Looks like the RS81's are the winner. Dad fears the unknown with this bike stuff I guess, I tried to sell the merits of DT Swiss, but he'd never heard of them used by anyone we know, so that was a flop.

  • Pacenti Belgiums?

  • I have some barely used (maybe twice?) RS81 C24's that don't get the miles they deserve...Let me know if he'd be interested

  • So your dad doesn't trust you?

  • What's the go-to tubeless road rim that could be used for CX too?
