Cheers all. Don't mind having to tweak bearings - might go for the fulcrums then.
Realistically they just have to better than the knackered old Easton wheels I have back in Sydney and last 6 weeks. -
• #5053
They come in quite a bit over quoted weight btw, if that bothers you.
-
• #5054
Oh really? Like closer to 1800 or 1900g?
-
• #5055
1800ish, from memory.
-
• #5056
1800ish
Same as the R24 then, which is 1800g sans rim tapes and skewers.
-
• #5057
Well the 1800g was with rim tape, but not a huge difference either way.
-
• #5058
That's pretty even then. 1900 - 2kg is when I admit, I would give them a miss. I guess the only difference is brand perception. and red nipples.
-
• #5059
TBH, for the price the weight is standard, cheap Shimano and Mavic wheels also have similar weight.
It doesn't feel like a slog climbing on the Fulcrum rims if you're worried about that, bearing is silky smooth though.

In that case, go for another wheelset if you find the R501 heavy, I didn't find it heavy at all.
Maybe Superstar might be a good option for a sub 1500g wheelset.
-
• #5062
WHen I say heavy, I mean in ride quality - the r501 never felt lively or easy to spin up. And this is in comparison to my current wheels which are ~1800.
Have looked at superstar, but £229 for the Arc22 or £249 for the Arc31, can't quite stretch to that. Unless there's some miracle discount code?
-
• #5063
10k code gets you 10% off
-
• #5064
Guess those Arc22 & Arc31 rims are rebranded Kinlin XR-22T and 31T?
-
• #5065
superstar pave 28 are £175 with discount. same width as fulcrum lg
-
• #5066
Looks like it. Wonder how well they build up?
-
• #5067
Boom, didn't see those on first glance. That may be the set to get. Might do something silly like red hubs just for giggles too.
-
• #5069
Ordered the pave 28 wheels from superstar, let's see how they go. Not in red, chickened out.
-
• #5070
Yeah, so I now hear. Got a very good relationship with LBS/wheel builder, so any problems will get fixed. Still, annoying if it happens to you if you're on holiday, for example.
-
• #5071
Not in red, chickened out.
:(
-
• #5072
I really like my set, the polished silver looks quite smart. The rim tape isn't great, and also not very light.
-
• #5073
Didn't realise you had to red rims and red hubs together. I wasn't quite ready to go back to my MTB roots. And chicken.
-
• #5074
If they've not changed their rim tape I'll be replacing that straight away. last thing you want on new wheels is p*nctures from exposed spoke hole edges.

Looking for some high end shimano compatible hubs in Silver. Shimano DA and ultegra seem to be black or dark grey. Any recommendations?
Probably going to build to Mavic open pros, unless anyone can think of a better / lighter rim, that also comes in silver, is not deep section, and would be sympathetic to an older steel frame.
Yeah, been using my 5 LGs for a couple of months. They've been fine in that time, as you'd expect. They're wide, bit lighter than what I had before. Had to tweak the bearings a tad but been fine since.
