some people are too lazy to unscrew all the nipples.
-
• #4578
Or they might be built with ally nipples and be all seized

Said no when they proposed this for your lovely rear wheel rebuild.
-
• #4580
They don't. I mean maybe some time-pressured mechanics do this as a rule because it streamlines the process but it's not the case that it's always necessary.

What spokes should I use for road bike disc wheels? Other parts I'm thinking of using so far are Archetypes and Novatec D711SB/712SB.

Personally I prefer the old 'zip tie the new rim to the old one then transfer the spokes one by one' trick.
But only on ma own hoops.
-
• #4583
I've always used the 'tape the old spokes together' method.

I'm on the third rear and second front Open Pro on some DA7800 hubs with Sapim Race/CX Ray combo after about 6 years use.

Rep for reusing your spokes that brilliantly but you had to break more for that magic one rim/ year factor.

I think we need an in-depth discussion about the merits of each method.

@cable What spoke count are you planning on using, and how much do you weigh?
-
• #4588
Just ordered some Cosmics.
Bring on teh hatez
-
• #4589
No surprises there.

• #4590
And I like Mike Cotty.

• #4591
Hah - that's pretty much the bike they are going on.
Except the Alu verison.

• #4592
I wouldn't class myself as a hater, but I don't really see the point of the cosmics...
a lot of club mates have them as training wheels for TT bikes and I just don't think they offer enough weight or aero advantage for the money*
*this is based on no real science, just a feeling..

I bought them predominently becuase I think they look good. And they stop well for a crabon wheel.
And they'll fit my CAAD9 / CAAD10 / Stupid ti. Fixie Inc. biek.
When I'm cranking out 6W/kg at FTP I'll get some Zipps.
-
• #4594
Ah see I thought you were talking about cosmic elites...
-
• #4595
No subtitles tho.

climbing wheels, I don't really care about aero and such, but would like a great climbing wheelset.
I can get Zipp, Mavic and Shimano on trade, trouble is which would be the best choice? the Dura Ace C24 look pretty great despite not being wide enough.

I'd look at Ryde Sprint on (heavybutstiff) DA9000 24/28h with alloy nips and a silly lightweight cassette. Laser or cx-ray spokes depending on budget.
You might want some more spokes.

For which bike, Ed?

His HC bike.

Has anyone really spent much time with the ultra-light Ryde rims? I've been somewhat curious about them - the low max spoke tension is a turnoff but the weight is pretty excellent.
I didn't know that. Out of interest, why do people always just cut the hub out of a set of wheels with worn rims? Or does 'It depends (on condition, mileage, abuse, type of spoke, etc).' answer my question? :-P
